toasterhead Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Disclaimer: My blood alcohol level may have influenced this review.:-) Thursday night was the Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America tasting event, held in Denver for the first time in many years. Five friends and I attended and spent the evening focusing in on the smells and flavors of the whiskies, which may have helped us later when it came to judging the cigars. It was a smashing success and afterward four of us headed over to Churchill's Bar at the Brown Palace Hotel for smokes. Sorry no pictures. I keep my humidor at 60-63 degrees and 65% humidity and these had rested about 2 months; no dry boxing this time. We all had cigars from the same SLB and the construction was flawless with no hard spots noted. The wrappers were sleek and sensuous medium colorado. The aroma was sweet tobacco and chocolate. Everyone lit up and the aroma of the smoke was quite pleasant, catching the attention of the waitress and some fellow smokers around us. The Colorado Avalanche were getting pounded 8-2 on TV, so we turned our attention to the cigars and good conversation. I paired mine with a 10 year old tawny port. The first 1/3 for everyone was light and mellow with plenty of smoke but no stand out flavors. There was a hint of the grassy, citrus like flavor but not much. By the middle third I was loving this cigar with more prominent toasted tobacco and chocolate flavors. I caught some coffee with cream notes and some spice when exhaled through the nose too. One of my friends had to even up the burn but no one had a plugged cigar. One friend thought the end was harsh but I think he was tugging away at his cigar a little too fast. I kept mine going to the last 1/2 inch and enjoyed rich toasted flavors to the end. No one felt it was a particularly strong cigar from a nicotine standpoint. I was still smiling the next day at the plesant aftertaste despite a wee bonnie headache.:-P I would call this cigar smooth and suave, with medium body and strength. I look forward to some more experience with aged cigars in the very near future ;-) to see what can become of these with time. Score now 89-91. Cheers, Dave
jdbrown Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Nice review Toasterhead. I miss my old home in Evergreen! My early 07's have just started to turn for the better. I need to wait another year on these.
smokum Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Great review..I am smoking thru some 06 Sig IV's and they are very good too.
El Presidente Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Great review Dave. I sometimes become confused with Cohiba Siglo IV. They can be spicy powderkegs or smooth subtle cigars. Recent examples (07) tend to take the mid line which is not a bad thing. Still one of the best cigars with 5-7 years on them.
