Just had some Sea Wynde Pot Still for the first time this evening. I'm impressed. There is a bar near me that opened recently called The Brandy Library which has a HUGE number of obscure spirits. The menu is about 25 pages long. I plan on slowly (or not so slowly) working my way through it.» I am very big into my R(h)ums. Some of the favorites being:

Haven't had much experience with rum since I was a teenager with good old Aussie Bundy Rum. Rough as guts. It either puts you off it for life or you love it. Seeing as I demolished half a bottle when I was 15 and only about 55kgs and preceeded to heave my guts up all night and the next day I now can't stand the smell of the stuff...Until I tried Carney Rum when I was in Cuba. I'm kicking myself for not bringing a few bottles back with me.

!LOL! Bill.

Yes...you can run a tractor on Bundaberg Rum....and we have all driven the porcelin bus after a night on it :-|

Cuban rums as a neat drinking rum are almost beyond compare with Caney and Santiago being inexpensive and world class.

I'll have to check these out next time I'm in TJ. I saw them for sale, cheaper than HC for same age, but wasn't sure of quality. Are they similar? HC7 is "only" about $20 US per 750ml.

Recently I was at one of my favorite restaurants and the owner and I started talking about rums. I told him about the HC Cuban Barrelproof and how much I enjoyed it over the 7 year old. He smiled, walked behind the bar and came back with 2 glasses of something he thought I should try. He mentioned to me that these are the 2 best rums in the world and asked which I preferred. I slowly tasted both and was just blown away at how good both were. One was was slightly spicier with more fruit flavors, the other with more vanilla flavors. Both were immensely smooth with great finish. Both were just stupendous and was tough to choose one over the other, but I had a slight preference to the spicier of the two. He revealed that the one I chose was the Havana Club 15 year old reserva and the other was the Zapaca 25 year old XO. He was certainly right, these are the 2 best rums I have ever tasted. Both drunk neat and were probably the 2 smoothest liquor I have ever tasted.

What determines what rums I like is the level of sweetness, too much is too much and not enough is not enough. I like the following in this order:

Zaya

HC7

Zacapa 23

The Zaya and Zacapa are similar, Zacapa being slightly sweeter. I like the HC7 for less sweetness and more oak.

The HC15 is too sweet for me.

Yep, to me, the Zacapa 23 tastes like Zaya with a bit of Gran Marnier added. I just love it neat, slightly chilled.

I have tried the Barbancourt Rhum 15 year old and the 8 year old. The 8 year old has a serious kick; the 15 year old is smooth.

For some reason, here in Delaware I have not been able to find the Zaya or the Ron Zacapa 23 yr old. I've been looking though.

Hi Time has the best prices around. Shipping for 2 bottles is less than 10 bucks.

When ya order, let us know what you think. Those are 2 of the finest rums available.

I like good "sipping" rums as well, though bourbon is usually what I reach for first. I've tried:

Pampero 8 yr (Venezuela)

Appleton Estates 12 yr (Jamaica)

Ron Matusalem Reserva 15 yr (Dominican)

Ron Matusalem 12yr (Dominican)

Barbancourt 15 yr

And a couple of others that I can't remember right now. Saw a few in this thread that I might have to try and find.

Good topic.:ok:

CIGARHead...

Thanks for the link. I will definitely need to make use of this site. Do you purchase much of your Rum online or do you buy mostly through your local liquor store? Thanks again.

I was 100% buying from Hi Time. I found hardly any premium rums in the liquor stores around me. I recently found a local guy that gets most of the small batch, premium rum so I go to him when Im in a pinch. His prices are quite a bit higher than Hi Time. Obviously, the only drawback of ordering online is the shipping costs, which for me ended up being cheaper still.

If your feeling spendy, try the Neisson Reserve Rhum Agricole Vieux. If I were you Id pick up a bottle of either Zacapa 23 or Zaya (Different taste, but both from Guatemala..sweet (not overly) and refined... and a bottle of El Dorado 15yr..but looks as though they are outta stock...but from the same region go for the Plantation Guyana rum.

Like cigars, the fun is in trying all of 'em.;-)

I am not a huge Rum drinker, but Zaya, HC7 and Zacapa are quite nice when the mood strikes me.

Pyrat, and others on that overly sweet, occasionally citrus line are a little nauseating, esp. on the morning after lightly over indulging.

My favorite cigar drink BY FAR is Grand Marnier. I have always been partial to sweet alcoholic beverages.

I haven't tried the 15 year yet, but I thought the 8 year was pretty good. Pretty distinctive.

There's a lot of great rums from countries other than Cuba. If you guys haven't checked out the Ministry of Rum, you should.

I guess I'm a scotch whisky guy. I'll dirnk about anything that's not swill, but like Aberlour, Highland Park, well hell any single malt. Oh and bourbon. I guess I just like booze, perhaps it's the chemical dependancy thing.

I recently had my first glass of Pyrat Planter's XO.

It might be too sweet for some...but for me, it was delicious! Very woody, molassesy, and smooth :-)
