broozer Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 The first cigar of the day is an ERDM grandes de espana from 1997. I bought two boxes of these last year and after smoking through half of one box I come to realize that this is one of the best cigars I have in my aristocrat cabinet humidor. This cigar started out very smooth, elegant and the flavors are extremely balanced. MRN says these are best smoked at 5-7 years old and could be bland after 10 years, but I couldn't disagree more. I got these boxes at a great price (thanks drew) and I now regret not getting about 10 boxes of them. The draw is perfect on this cigar (none have been plugged in the box so far) and the creaminess of the cigar is building nearing the end of the first third. There is a VERY light pepper taste as well, but it is not overpowering in the least bit. My espresso at times over powers this cigar, but never so much that the flavors don't come through. ERDM's may be mild to medium in strength, but they in no way lack flavors. At the halfway point the pepper flavors have picked up a bit and are pretty much on even par with the creaminess. There's one or two more slight flavors I'm picking up, but I can't begin to describe them………..other then REALLY DAMN GOOD (it's almost trinidadish'). Nearing the last third the cigar hasn't changed flavors much, but they are much more prominent and powerful (kinda like turning your stereo speakers up from about 4 to 9). The wrapper where the band was has torn and is lifting a bit once I pulled the band off, but it's damn sure not affecting the flavors. The pepper flavors are really kicking it up in the last third of this cigar , but not so much that it make this cigar really strong or powerful. Well, the cigar is pretty much done with now. There's only about an inch or so left, but I can't say enough good things about this cigar. I will say I am SOOOOOO glad this is not one that has been discontinued. I need to pick up a box or two of these with less age on them to see how they taste younger. This cigar was so good I think I'm just gonna make this an ERDM day. Next up is an '01 gran corona, an '05 corona de luxe and then a '98 tainos. What the hell, I got nothing to do today.
greenpimp Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Great review! Funny--I also bought 2 boxes of these from Drew last year. Unbelievable smoke. Mine become almost full-bodied at the end, and have a powerful, earthy finish with a floral attack. Wonderful cigar. Perfect construction, as you said. Truth be told this is what made me fall in love with the ERDM marca. Previous attempts, including a box of 1997 Choixs, left me unimpressed. But this cigar turned on the light for me.
CIGARHead Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Damn fine cigar right there...and a damn good lookin spread of food as well. I know a lot of people dont like to eat while smoking, but I almost always have something to munch on. Very nice review.

gehrig24 Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Great Review Bruce. I love this cigar and Mel was kind enough to include a couple in a trade we did last year. I am hanging on to them for some great weather to really enjoy this cigar.
