Greetings All!

And Happy New Year...2008....and my first post for the year. I have a question for all of you, what is the difference(s) between the Ramon Allones Specially Selected and Allones Specially Selected robusto's?

I recently acquired a box of the Ramon Allones Specially Selected, and, was unaware that RA has two variations of this size. Is the Allones Specially Selected still in production?

Thanks to all, and let's have a wonderfully smoky year!

As far as I know, the difference is there used to be a 25 count slide lid box that has been discontinued.

Now it's 25 count dress box, or 50 count slide lid box. Hopefully others will provide additional info.

The vitola name “Specially Selected” first appeared in the year 1980, the year all vitolas were standardised.

There was however a vitola called “Allones Specially Selected” found in the complete Ramón Allones vitola list in the year 1962, but this list does not have “Specially Selected”. This vitola has a special dimension, it’s neither a Hermoso #4 nor a Robusto, it has a unique dimension: 124 mm x 48 rg.

After further research it was discovered that this is the RASS we have nowadays, changed to the Robusto factory vitola in the year 1980, the year when all different factory vitolas were united and simplified.

The confusing thing is that in some documents and on some boxes the name could sometimes be “Allones Specially Selected” or sometimes be “Specially Selected”.

Habanos S.A. decided in 2002 to finalise the name as “Allones Specially Selected”. The name “Specially Selected” will no longer appear in any boxes or documents.

Thanks Guys!

Yeah, a little confusing because some vendors list each, and now I know that they all mean the same thing.

BTW, some vendors say "always betterin cabinet", is this just aimed at us to buy more smokes or is their some validity to this?

Thanks!

Ahhh... you're asking a classic question. According to the cognoscenti, there was a time when cabinet seleccions were supposedly superior to those cigars which were destined for dress boxes.

But nowadays, everyone seems to agree that there is no distinction, at least in quality, between cigars in cabinets and those in dress boxes.

However... many people, myself included, believe that cigars age better, and thus are more desireable, in cabinets. There are various theories about why this might be so, including the different impacts of paper and cardboard vs. wood, air circulation, etc.

I like 'em in cabs.

If the question is whether or not to buy RASS in 50 cabs or not then buy the 50 cabs. Blend is the same. The only difference is how sad you are going to be when you smoke through that first layer of the dress box and realize that you only have half a box left. These cigars go fast around my house.

Claudius, thanks for the information. I have an '05 box that does indeed say "Allones Specially Selected"

on the sides. Yet, and I know this will come as a surprise, the HSA website - www.habanos.com -

still lists them as "Specially Selected" :-)

Yes and no. It USED TO BE the case that the cigars in SLBs were better constructed. Like 20 or more years ago. That's not the case anymore.

However, as mentioned by Dr. Habano, SLBs are better for aging. Furthermore, they are also "nicer" in that they are round and not box pressed. This is of course a matter of personal preference.

BTW, RASS in SLBs of 50 are called "Especial Selection". 3 names were not enough!
