We had a few beers and wines to plan our 2009 tours.

Here is what we had in mind.

Six of us Aussie locals will hire Harleys and ride from Tennessee to the RTDA in New Orleans (not sure if New Orleans as the RTDA location in 2009 is confirmed yet). Any forum members who want to come for a ride (bike, car or truck are more than welcome). We will take a couple of support vehicles for gear which will allow non riders to come along.

* we have budgeted for 9 days riding to make New Orleans (is it possible).

* Stop each day at a different town and enjoy cigars and dinner with local members. We want to avoid major cities where possible as we really want to enjoy small town America.

*Will need to hire bikes in Tennessee and drop off in New Orleans if possible.

* We all spend two days at the RTDA. Those not on the ride can fly in.

We will fly out from New Orleans to LAX then home.

Is it feasible?

Is there interest? Numbers are not really a problem.

Any local knowledge on possible routes?

Could be a hell of an 11 days be it if you joined the total tour, part of it or simply caught up in New Orleans for the RTDA.

»Hi Rob,

Here's an agency ( http://www.destinationusa.net/company/motorcycle.htm )

that I believe allows one-way rentals....they have offices in Nashville, TN and New Orleans. Plus if you're not up for a Harley, they have other bikes available (I'm from Milwaukee, so tend away from Harley's since they're everywhere here)

I may be up for that trip, although my current passion is flying...but, sounds like a great idea!

OK given that we have nine days where should we start from or alternatively can we loop around somewhere ;-)

Posted

Nine days would allow you to start from almost anywhere in the eastern part of the country and still make for a pretty easy ride.

If it's in July... be prepared for some hot sticky weather in that part of the country!

The Natchez Trace Pkwy. runs from Nashville, almost to New Orleans and it is a GORGEOUS drive (i'm sure it would be REALLY fun on a Harley too). It takes you through mostly small towns and allows you to stay away from the interstates. If you want to burn up 9 days though, I would start somewhre else unless you have a ton of members along that route that you want to spend an afternoon each with. One option would be to start somewhere around Knoxville TN, Asheville NC, or Lexington KY and then head to New Orleans by way of Nashville. It would be alot easier to burn up the 9 days.

CHICAGO!!!!

We would throw you one hell of a send off party before taking off on your adventure.

Hi Guys,

I think this is the first time I have posted here, but been around a long time. Great forum.

Just some thoughts on this possible road trip;

The Natchez Trace is, as Rogers72 mentioned, a great road for cycles. Several points you can get on and off.

Memphis and Nashville are very nice towns with various things to do. Memphis has Beale Street with good clubs and music. About 1 hour south is Tunica Mississippi with quite a few casinos (9 or 10), two golf courses, a trap shooting range and of course the big river. There is the old river road from there you can take down south. All flat Delta farmland, but interesting Blues joints along the way.

South of New Orleans about 1 hour is Port Sulfur which has great red fishing. About 30 min. furthur south is Venice which I think has the best fishing in the USA. Great guides in the area that use flyrods or spinning tackle. I have not been in July.

I will think on this some more and maybe come up with other things to do.

Why not just start at L.A. and end in NOLA? This will allow you to ride through some of the most beautiful natural wonders in CA, AZ, and NM. It'll be a 2000 mile journey and you'll be able to achieve this quite easily in 9 days.

I would personally not plan a motorcycle trip around embryos, frozen or otherwise. But then again, I am not from Australia.

What do you guys think of us, anyway? Embryo tour? Oh well, I guess Tennessee is a good place to start. :-P

I might be interested in a ride. Some one has to keep you guys from getting lost. This sounds like Deliverence revisited on Harleys.

One hitch you have to bring us Gold Coast HD shirts.

Rob you may want to start your ride in North Carolina.

One of the premier motorcycle roads is located in NC and ends in TN.

Its called the Tail of the Dragon. Its touted to have 318 curves in its 11 mile length. http://www.mindspring.com/~hume/motorcycle/dragonstail.html

Long hauls are a piece of cake. I've ridden 600 miles in a day but thats not the riding you'll be doing. Its much better to take your time

stay off the major interstates and ride on secondary roads. You can take in so much more when you're only doin 50 mph.

You hit it on the head Loki....50MPH, looking around..trying to rememebr which side of the road to stay on. Ride 3 hrs in the am...lunch...3 hours in the afternoon...hook up with a few FOH'ers...cigars...BBQ...Bar...Motor Inn...sleep....and do it again.

Not Harley specific...all welcome to come along for the ride. Ken has confirmed he will be driving the bus.

Average of 300 miles per day over 9 days will give you a total of 2700 miles. The ride from California to NOLA using scenic routes would make this a perfect ride.

You could start in NC (where I am :-D ). A trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains would be very memorable and its a straight shot across Rt 40 to get to Tenn. I think its maybe 7 hours to Nashville from where I'm at so you could split that into two days, or perhaps just start the trek in Ashville if they have the bikes available there.

Asheville would be a great starting point -- from the Biltmore to Bourbon Street in '08!

If only I had a bike... If only I'd have ever RIDDEN a bike!!!

:rotfl:

Thankfully we have some serious riders amongst us. I on the other hand ride a Montesa ;-)

The tour is on. Just need to spend some time knuckling out the detail.

All good ideas come from a few bottles of wine :-D

:rotfl:

My thoughts exactly when I saw the first post, Tennessee and staying off the main roads. So Rob, definitely watch Wild Hogs as someone else has suggested, but Deliverance should also be on the prep list :-|

Cigar head,

I spent the first 21 years of my life in Fl and after driving from FSU to home in Miami a million times I can honestly say that the drive is miserable especially in July.

Rob, I would advise you to start further north, i heard Chicago and would have to agree. Another good option would be further north along the Appalacian trail such as PA. You'll get a good look at beautiful mountains and 9 days would be a relaxing ride.

Enjoy!!

I must say though that Fl isnt all bad by any means. I really enjoy spending some time with my family down there and will be in Miami in 2 weeks!!! Steak, seafood, cigars, golf, and great weather. I have officially mentally left the office for the day.

Crap!

I typed up a reply yesterday giving you a suggested itinerary, and for some reason it didn't post.

Here it is again.

Fly into Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. Go visit Draper Tobacco and have dinner and cigars at Shelly's Back Room

Day 1

Bike down to Roanoke, Virginia via the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. (300 miles). Visit Milan Tobacconist and have dinner at the historic Hotel Roanoke.

Day 2

On to Asheville, NC. via US Route 221 and the Blue Ridge Parkway (250 miles). Plenty to do in Ashville.

Day 3

Over to Nashville TN through the Great Smoky Mtn. National Park and then some Interstate Highway. (300 Miiles)

Day 4

Might spend a day in Nashville.

Day 5.

Down to Tupelo MS via the Natchez Trace. (200 miles)

Day 6

Over to Tunica MS (125 miles) for a night at the Grand Casino or one of the other Tunica Casino resorts.

Day 7

Down to Vicksburg on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. (200 miles)

Day 8

On to New Orleans. (250 miles).

I can just see you attracting the occasional *** motorcycle cop.:rotfl:

Thanks Van.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like a great ride where we can catch up with plenty of friends.

July 2009 FOH ride is "on" :-)
