El Presidente Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 With John Howard, our Prime Minister of 10 years lagging 8 points behind in the polls before this Saturdays election....here is his final speech ;-) http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=7tjftg2XW_M&feature=related And his speech on our relationship with the USA http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=yGNNTwXhvX0
ARRV Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Not really one for timing poor John - the writing has been on the wall for some time and he should have walked. Losing the election will be a bitter end, but after so many setbacks to begin his career maybe it is the only way he knows! So we will be welcoming Howard lite come Sat night. First Qld PM?? A Prime Minister from Bris Vegas. There goes the country :-D

Taken the country 66 years to give us another go
Guest Warren Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 I think it's a shame if John Howard is remembered for things like an unpopular friendship with a less than popular President. Or his reforms to the work environment ,which in my opinion had to happen. I had friends with employees who where not producing and bleeding them dry , some were down right trouble makers. We should also remember that under his leadership our country became one of the strongest economy's . What will we get if he goes, don't forget what his predecessors did for us. What was it again , the recession we had to have ( or they couldn't avoid) Interest rates through the roof.
ARRV Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 I too know people in small business who before the workplace reforms were being done over by employees. Couldn't sack people or otherwise had to pay them at least 2 months salary - all in an office where they only had 2 employees and was running on the smell of an oily rag. However I think those reforms have really hit some people very hard and because everyone votes that will in turn hurt Howard. Amazingly I think Howard's approval rating is better than Kevin's - at least in economic status of country - and he will lose an election! I think people are feeling sufficiently comfortable to make a change and Kevin is probably the most conservative Labor leader in recent memory. And the ALP is practically agreeing with everything the Libs do save for Iraq and workplace reforms (maybe on the edges of climate change too) However we shall see if the unions pull rank once they're in government and maintain this comity with Liberal policy. I simply cannot imagine that the unions will sit by idly after all the wonga they've shoved into the labor party's campaign. So what will happen? Wages go up, can't sack people anymore, inflation thus increase, interest rates increase, small business dies, no more practical full employment, taxes increase etc etc Allan Border becomes captain of the cricket team Australia II wins the Americas Cup LA olympics The merry-go-round continues
