ferdigutdannet Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 It looks like i have found a great forum that might help me get a god satrt into the world of cigars. I am looking for a not-to-expensive humidor, but still i would like it to be high quality. Can anyone name-drop some producers and models that i might find at eBay and maybe say somthing about the maximum prize as well. Would be most greatfull:-) (if posible, it would be great if i can keep my pipe tobaco along with the cigars or is that unheard of?) Also where should i start to get the best picture/overwiew of habanos cigars? In advans, thanks:-)

Just about everything under 70 dollars on Ebay is about the same quality. I bought my 120 Cigar humi on ebay, it came from China for about 40 bucks. Seems to do a good job. If you buy one with a hygrometer on it, dont trust it, it's crap.. buy a digital. Get some HumiBeads 65% for humidification To get a feeling on Habanos, respond to this post with as much detail as you can on what type of flavor profile you like from a cigar. Do you like cigars with lots of smoke or little smoke? Do you like cigars that are strong or light on your palate? That type of thing and we can give you some suggestions. I'd spend about 250 bucks on a sampler of 2 cigars each, when they arrive put them in your humi for at least two weeks before you smoke em. 30 days preferred. Ether.

As another newbie to both cigars and FOH, I would say that this very Forum is one of the best places to get the overview that you are looking for. I am making a stock of cigars from what I have read here. Rob's selections might be a good place to start and just read back on posts here, there is usually a similar view among members on what is thought to be a good cigar. Often the advice given is to make up a selection of single cigars in order to decide for yourself, which smokes you prefer. It is usually advised to keep different cigars separate so as not to get a marriage of the distinct aromas, so therefore I would also suggest that your tobacco is also kept in it's own container to prevent such a mix. The Big Boss here, El Presidente does not allow links to other suppliers but think this is only applies to cigars. Not wanting to upset THE MAN, I will not give links to Humidor suppliers but one brand that has been previously mentioned here is Staebell from www.aristocrathumidors.com these do look to be quality humis and you can judge prices from there. Price, of course would depend on how big a humi you would want to buy. Again the good advice from here is to go for the largest, you can afford. Just put Humidors in Google and you will find many links, including those for sale on Ebay. My initial mistakes were to go for cheaper humis and I'm already finding that the two reasonable priced ones I have bought are not large enough for my current stock of cigars. You should look for humis with a lining of Spanish Cedar. This is the only wood recommended for humis as it breathes, that is it has the quality to soak up excess water and also release it back when the humi becomes to dry. Another reason is that tobacco beetles hate the taste and smell of it while cigars are enhanced by the pleasant aroma from Spanish Cedar. I hope that gives you a little to go on and perhaps other members can add their own opinions to help you to start what I'm sure you will find is a wonderful /pastime/habit and you will soon be throwing your pipe away. Good luck, Mel39
Colt45 Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 A quality wood desktop humidor is a rite of passage for any cigar smoker, but as has already been stated, you may want to think bigger. An inexpensive, less elegant alternative to one of the many fine cabinet humidors you'll find in threads here is a large cooler (eski in local parlance). As to pictures / overviews of Havanas, take a look in the Czar shop, and I also highly recommend Trevor2118's website : www.cubancigarwebsite.com And to go straight to the horses mouth, so to speak, www.habanos.com Welcome to FOH.
ferdigutdannet Posted July 28, 2007 Author Posted July 28, 2007 WOW... thanks a million for the fast and really super responses. In referance to the fisrt reply by Ether, my taste turns more towards the stronger/fuller mouth fell. But that said, i think i can enjoy all from mild to strong, depending on the day and mood. I tend to turn away from anything that is to aromatic and in anyway flavoured. I work with coffe and here it is a fact that the more you get into tasting and the more you drink the coffe and learn about it, the more you apriciate/discover the milder more finer aromas in the coffe. could this be the same with cigars?. Maybe this gives you a idea of my tast preference. Again, really enjoy reading your responses. But now got to sleep, its in the middle of the night here in. Norway
havanaclub7 Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Welcome to the forum. If you buy an inexpensive humidor, don't use the crappy humidification system you will likely receive with your humidor. Get a Puck: http://www.cigarmony.com/store/index.php?c...342d3b3d29b5675 Rob recommended this to me for my dad and his came just yesterday. In 24 hours, his humidor is at 65% RH and holding steady. The puck comes in two sizes - 50 for smaller desktop humidors and 100 for larger desktop humidors. It also comes in 65% RH and 70% RH. Norway's climate is a lot like the Great Plains so I would probably get the 65% puck. It works and for less than $20 U.S., it's a bargain. By the way, Norway is a beautiful country. One of my good friends is the U.S. Ambassador to Norway and he just loves it there.
Ethernut Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 This is a terrific thread, check it out, http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/board_entr...id=54107#p54107 Does this help you define your flavor profile any?
