adamg Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Hi Newbie here looking for some advice on Corona Gorda's. This is a size that I don't have covered in my humi and I'm wondering what 25 count box to go for out of the following:- HU 46 JL 1 HDM 1 RyJ Ex 3 Punch Punch All of which are likely to be 06 box dates I love a cigar that draws well, there is nothing worse than a plugged cigar! Your advice would be appreciated!!
BigSlick Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Not knowing what taste profile you are looking for, I will tell you what I would choose: JL1
tigger Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 It really would help to know some other cigars you enjoy smoking. Also helpful to know if you're planning on putting them down for a few years, or if you're looking for something to smoke now. The Upmanns in particular really benefit from quite a few years of rest. Without knowing those things: assuming that you're buying them to smoke soon, I would go with the Hoyos. The JL or the RyJ would probably be ok too, but I've only smoked a few of each, and as such, am not too familiar with them. If you're buying something to hold and smoke in a bunch of years, I'd go with the Mag 46s, hands down. Maybe get some single of the brands you're considering, and go from there?
adamg Posted July 25, 2007 Author Posted July 25, 2007 In my humi I currently have Trini Coloniale & Robusto Extra, Edmundo's, HDM 2's, Siglo II's. Boli RC's and RG PC's. Of the above, I am not digging the Trini RE's (bland for such an expensive cigar) and the RG PC's (little flavour and a poor draw). I love the Edmundo's and HDM Epi 2's - they draw fantastically (a key criteria for me) and taste great. I was going to go for HDM Epi 1's, but wonder if they are too similar to the Epi 2's? BTW, they are for smoking over the next 12 months or so.
smokum Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 JL1 ....and you really can't go wrong with a Punch Punch if its spot on.
adamg Posted July 25, 2007 Author Posted July 25, 2007 Not that it really matters a jot, but are the 06 JL1's banded or unbanded?

The CG's are a great size, and there are quite a few to choose from: First off, don't buy an entire cab of a brand that you don't know. Too big a gamble. Choose something from a marca that you already like. That points towards the HdM Epi #1, which is one of the very few Hoyos that I really like. Recent issues have been quite good, too. If you like Cohiba, you won't go wrong with a Sig IV, but I would age them for a year or two. Many people love the Upmann Mag 46, and I do too, but if you haven't tried one I wouldn't spring for a whole box. If you like Punch, I'd recommend the Royal Seleccion #11. Anyone who likes the Boli Royal Corona is gonna love the Coronas Extra. Hey, it's not quite a CG, but it's close! I'd leave the Juan Lopez and SLR Serie A alone unless you've tried 'em first.
genevapics Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 » Not that it really matters a jot, but are the 06 JL1's banded or unbanded? 07's are banded. I cannot speak to the 06's. These are nice mild cigars.
Gryphon Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Corona Gorda's, are great I personally don't like buying a box of a cigar I have not smoked before. Why not go for 3 or 4 of each of the following: HU 46 JL 1 HDM 1 Punch RS 11 Bolivar Coronas Extra Siglo IV Then decide which you would like a box of.

El Presidente Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 » Not that it really matters a jot, but are the 06 JL1's banded or unbanded? Banded. Juan Lopez Seleccion No 1 and Punch Royal Seleccion No 11 would be at the top of the list just ahead of Bolivar Corona Extra.
gyosa Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 i agree prez ... the RS 11's are without a doubt , hands -down , the BEST corona gorda - or cigar , period , that i have smoked in the last year. absolutely fanfreakintastic ! :-P -bk » » Not that it really matters a jot, but are the 06 JL1's banded or » unbanded? » » Banded. » » Juan Lopez Seleccion No 1 and Punch Royal Seleccion No 11 would be at the » top of the list just ahead of Bolivar Corona Extra.

justinphilly Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 i love that nobody mentions the punch ss2.. shhhh! they suck!;-)
gyosa Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 they're out of production , right ? difficult to find ? -bk » i love that nobody mentions the punch ss2.. shhhh! they suck!;-)
Claudius Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 » they're out of production , right ? Yes. Bolivar gets my vote. But then again, I'm not objective: Bolivar always gets my vote for certain format when Ramon Allones is not available (and unfortunately, there are only 3 regular production RA vitolas left).
