I on the other hand can not stand Unions or what they stand for.

I have been through all the BS with them when working. Nothing gives anyone the right to try to tell me that I cant work in a certain place because I am not union.

I told them if they can guarentee for me to make atleast $135,000 a year I would join....................

Their answer was " well, we do have benifits"

Unions can be their own worst enemy but we are all better off for having them. My father worked on high rise construction buildings as a rigger in the late 70's until mid 80's.....no harness but the danger money was excellent. His union stepped in and tidied up all safety issues. Hats off to the union.

My father two years later reluctantly reported a fellow colleague for continually drinking on the job. Working pissed walking beams 40 floors up doesn't last long. My father new the guy well, new his family and had talked to him at length. He was an alcoholic with a death wish.

My father got the sack after pressure on the company from Union officials. Turning in one of your own is not accepted under any circumstamces.

Good and Bad in all Unions.

LOL. Atleast they have some sort of "safety equipment". In Vietnam, there were a lot of locals TIG welding on the side of the street in shorts and a t-shirt, no eye protection, nothing. Not even shoes in most cases.

They were the ricers of welders.

I'm a proud member of the IBEW.

Union or not "Safety Has No Quiting Time".

Everyday that I put my boots on in the morning and take them off that afternoon is a good day.

I can't believe that dumbass has a plastic back over his head.

IBEW here to.

Unions

1)Best trained people period

2)Safety always on the job means you come home at night

3)Workers have rights

4)Medical,Pension plan and 401K

I worked non Union for a while and what I saw was a joke and I know all have to survive to make a living don't get me wrong.

But when I work or the job I am on I don't want Scabs working near me they are dangerous and not trained like a union worker.

And I know because I work on both sides of the fence.

Also I am proud to have changed a non Union shop to Union and make a better life for many middle class families.

Thank You and have a good night

Loved the pictures and this is proof that we need intelligence and common sense. It does not prove we need Unions. I'll stop here and cause no strife.;-)

Pictures like these should show us how backwards these countries are that we buy all the cheap Walmart crap from...but...

Have to disagree Jimmy...especially on #1...it may depend on the trade. I am also a Union member but have been in management for 15 years. The trades are slipping ...the young ones coming seem don't have the pride and work ethic anymore. Training is an absolute joke. Safety is one area I will agree with you. The biggest issue I have is the fact that the worst, laziest bastard gets the same pay increase as the ones who do all the work. You have to be treated as a group and generally as management you can't single out a collective bargaining agreement worker and give him more..as in pay for performance. Benefits in a collective bargaining unit generally are less than working for thew Corporation too. BUT...lets not even start with Corporate life....I'm about to move up in the hills to keep my sanity !!! Positives on both sides I guess....many a day I want to just put the tools back on and be happy.

Ok when i say Unions i mean tradesmen Electricans,Carpenters,Steamfitters and Plumbers etc etc we are the best trained in NYC and most of the country in these fields.

We joke around here in NYC saying that city workers are lazy ass and there Union so i get your point there.

But tradesmen here in NYC have to produce other wise they will be out of work and my Union will back up the company if the person can not produce good work skills.

I'm in a union for professors. No kidding. I have seen the good and bad of it. On the good side, they keep the administration from pulling BS that could get them stuck with grievances on issues like tenure decisions. On the bad side, they lobby for across the board raises instead of merit raises, and make it hard to reward excellence instead of longevity.
