Hell, I enjoyed it so much I lit another immediately.

You could have saved a lot of time, and just written the above. When I get a craving for a certain size and type of cigar, only two come to mind...

Cohiba Robusto, or Juan Lopez No. 2. I am surprised how often the JL wins out.

I think JL's are one my favorite "sleeper" brands..

I find them to be rather inexpensive compared to the other more popular brands, and they can still be had with some age to them..

The young ones are smokeable, but as these cigars age, they get darker, and oilier.

A great review Rob, on an excellent cigar!

Juan Lopez Seleccion No 2 RUC OCT 02

I wanted to to a formal review on some of these before the remaining half dozen cabs are gone. So many of the recent 2006 JLS2 have been powerhouses and very un Juan Lopez like....sensational mind you....but not what I have come to expect from Juan Lopez. I was intrigued to see how a 5 year old JLS2 would compare.

Visually attractive. Not a great deal of oil on the wrapper but there is a certain presence to them in their naked (unbanded) state. Construction is flawless. Nice aged tobacco smell at cold.

Cerrated the cap and the draw was on the easier side of perfect. Still very good. Cool tobacco on the lips. This was no Johnny come lately. You can taste the few years laying down.

Fired the foot. Light to medium in body in the traditional JLS2 style. Rich toasted tobacco with a definite kick of Tangerine/Orange peel. Beautiful start to this cigar. The cigar maintains the citrus tone for no more than a half inch before it moves more towards a bread/butter and woody profile. Minimal white pepper spice through the nose. Nice velvet coating to the mouth. Excellent level of smoke.

Great burn. There is an elegance to this cigar. It is no show pony. It is a cigar which remains relaxed an in control of a flavour wheel which stays tight to the bread/cream/butter/tobacco elements. Still light to mid bodied, it's relaxed easy delivery has a remarkable effect of putting you in the same frame of mind. Serene, contemplative. The minutes roll by as you glance at the cigar and somehow feel that all is good in the world.

Wallowing in what is one of the best cigars I have had of late. The body reached a mid level and there are some subtle introductions of nutty caramel. I have put two boxes aside for myself as I am a lover of lighter style complex flavoured cigars. They are ideal for those hot summer days with crisp white wine as you lounge around the pool or at the beach camping with family and friends. These situations call not for a tannic monster....but a symphony of delicate interplays on the palate.

I nubbed this cigar but forgot to take the final photograph. It was that type of cigar which transports your mind to a place where nothing really matters.

92/100 5/6 Smokerings.

For lovers of this style, grab the last few boxes or at least the 23 remaining from this box. Hell, I enjoyed it so much I lit another immediately.
