Mel Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 » Mel, define "best". If you say best do you mean » » a) the ones that taste best » the ones that smoke best » c) the ones that were most expensive » d) the ones that were the least expensive » e) the ones I had to almost humiliate myself for getting them » f) the ones I was on the look out for almost forever and finally got them » g) the ones that just represent best for what my cigar collections stands » h) the ones that are so "good" that I have not smoked them yet » i) the ones my wife does not know I own them for real » j) the ones I'm planing to smoke on my sons weddings » k) the ones out of the first box I ever bought » l) the ones I smoked on my own wedding » m) the one that I smoked with a dear friend » ... » Damn trouble maker. LOL You are so right on all points above but I let each figure out his own idea of "best". I like a,b,g, and especially i.
Tom Bolivar Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 » Damn trouble maker... Funny, that's what my bosses always say too ;-)
Colt45 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I was not going to chime in here as I don't have the breadth of experience with well aged Havanas, and definately not with boxes of same, but here goes: '03 Bolivar Coronas Gigantes '00 H. Upmann Sir Winston Churchill '00 RA 898V Two boxes I have sampled from, and have high expectations of: '06 Partagas Serie du Connaisseur No.3 '06 RA Estupendos RE
Mel Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 WOW Sixty Three differesnt cigars listed so far. What a wide variety of taste? There are some cigars that seem to be more highly favored over the others however and they are: Ramon Allones 898 mentioned 7 times in the top five Cohiba Robusto Monte Esp #1 4 times Partagas Pirimide Cohiba Lanceros P Lusi 3 times SLR DC PSD4 Reserva

Ken Gargett Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 mel, i have not done it but it might be interesting to see which producers are most often mentioned. what i have done is check through and there is not one single mention of cuaba. they have copped a bagging of late but here is a supposed premium house which could not get a single mention from any member of the forum.

Ken Gargett Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 » » mel, i have not done it but it might be interesting to see which » producers » » are most often mentioned. » Uh, hello, McFly....... see three posts above........ i'll type slowly. producers. not individual cigars. (unless i am going mad and stuff not coming thru??). what i was getting at was if say partagas had four mentions for three different cigars and so on. i was thinking it might give an indirect indication of what members felt were the best producers/houses/whatever you want to call them.

Thank you for the clarification. I simply assumed you were still mourning the departure of your young ward, and were in a bit of a state - my mistake. P.S. it must be a bit lonely up on the mountain.........

Miami101 Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Sorry most of the cigars I own get smoked....very fast.
habanohal Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Punch Diademas San Cristabol Mercaderes Cohiba Sellecion Reserve Por Lorranga Lonsdales 1983 Monte Especials #1 ( That I cant seem to smoke now) :-|
shrink Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 P.S. it must be a bit lonely up on the mountain......... Ken: he means Brokeback Mountain. Your ward: Smithy. It always amazes me how long it takes some soldiers to realize they've been shot.

Mel Posted May 8, 2007 Author Posted May 8, 2007 Enough of the love triangle talk(Colt, Smithy, Ken) back to the cigars. As Ken requested here goes a tally of the number of times a particular marca(house or brand name) was listed in the top five. Winner is Partagas at 22x Runner up is Cohiba at 17x Ramon Allones 11x Upmann 7x Punch 7x SLR 5x Bolivar 4x HDM 4x Monte 4x ERDM 3x Davidoff 2x R&J 2x Trinidad 2x Sancho Panza 1x Vegas Robaina 1x La Corona 1x Cuaba 00000000000000000x and for good reason Cuaba looks great but is less filling. Was another Marca missing mention? Looking at this list it does apear to me that thre cream rally does rise to the top. Any arguments ladies? I think the Boli should place higher than the Punch but that's me.
Colt45 Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 » Was another Marca missing mention? Looks like a few, but the ones that jump out at me are: Por Larranaga Diplomaticos San Cristobal de la Habana P.S. Care to make it a square dance?

Care to make it a square dance? Hell I ain't man enough to step in the ring with you. I have representatives of all three and they do not make the top fifteen list. The PL PC are the best of the lot for me. SCdlH are good and the Dips are ok.
Ken Gargett Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 mel, that was what i was getting at - would the usual suspects star or would there be a few smokies, so to speak. i think that some producers do throw up one now and again and the PLPC is an obvious example. but the cream did rise, which i guess is what you'd expect and hope happens. partagas and cohiba top and that means all is right with the world. for me, the SLR DC carries it but i think if it was a more widely enjoyed smoke, it would have pushed SLR higher. fans of the trinidad range may say the same thing - i'm not really a convert there. the one out of kilter for me here is upmann. i think they are going through a very disappointing period. past glories have saved it for me. also, i think monte deserves better but then i don't think i voted for them so can hardly complain. this would be a very interesting exercise to run annually. well done.
Cam Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 it worries me what some of you more exotic lads do with your cigars, there should be a dirty talk forum, as for the cigars i stand by all my davies
Mel Posted May 9, 2007 Author Posted May 9, 2007 » it worries me what some of you more exotic lads do with your cigars, there » should be a dirty talk forum, » » as for the cigars » » i stand by all my davies Reprobates and misfits need love too.;-) You must be the only one that owns these "Davies". Send me a few so I can see what all the fuss is about.;-) Ken, I expect that the SLR was handicapped by the low numbers of vitolas that they make and the fact that the DC size is not easily appreciated by all. If the top five list were re- evaluated to see which sizes are the most favored I would expect the DC to be low on the list. Would by the same token the Paretgas not be near the top due to the extremely large number of models made?
Sean9689 Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 My 5 rarest would be: #1 Habanos 1492 (from the humi) #2 Habanos 1994 (from the humi) #3 1988 Cohiba Corona #4 Partagas 150 (any of the 3 sizes...I like 'em all) #5 Various Cuban Davidoffs & Dunhillls... The 5 "most interesting" would be (in no particular order): *When I say "interesting", I mean, crazy tasting, weird, awesome, etc. #1 1985 Punch Nectares No. 2 #2 1970's Ramon Allones Private Stock Corona #3 1970's Rafael Gonzalez Vitola C #4 1980's Don Candido Selection Suprema No. 501 #5 1980's Dunhill Varadero
