Juan Lopez is my favorite brand and I wish I could get my hands on a few of them for my collection but after hearing the review I feel a little relieved.

But i wish you gents had a better time with them...

Smithy's reference to the French Palate is light to medium bodied, tobacco and milk coffee core, not too assertive on the palate.

I am not sure I agree but you could say that the Quai D'Orsay runs a similar profile.

I have him working currently so he could not answer directly.

Thanks for the review, Andrew. Going to Europe later this year and was going to look for these and the Boli Libertadores, but I guess I'll just concentrate on the Libertadores.

BTW, I see that your walkabout didn't take you very far from home.

» What is a PCC Punch? X:confused:

A reference to the 2006 Regional Release (Asia Pacific) of the Punch Super Robusto, which are distributed through Pacific Cigar Co (PCC = exclusive Habanos SA distributor for Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Filipinos, Malaysia, Australia,New Zealand, Indonesia, Fidji, Brunei, Papua New Guinea,Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, South Korea, Taiwan and Viet Nam). The other regional release for 2006 was the Ramon Allones Estupendo.

Oh. Given Smithy's history as an instigator, I just assumed he was suggesting that

the french have no taste..........

Colt, you know me just starting trouble where ever I can. Hell I've only got a couple of days so I thought I would instigate some trouble with an entire country.

Yeah, and it's my understanding that there are more than just a few Antiguans who

are not very happy with you right now.........

Those Obus look sweet. I love the JL line and a belicoso type smoke would be awesome if it had the same profile as their regular line. :-P

Juan Lopez - Regional Release France - Obus – RTO AGO 06 – Box 949/1200

Tasting Date 30/4/07

One of Robs friends (Claudius) graciously sent Rob a box of Juan Lopez Obus which were a regional release for France in 2006. We allowed the cigars to settle for about six weeks in the humidor before taking the opportunity to try them late yesterday afternoon on the deck just as Lise turned the keys in the ignition and headed for home ;-) Both Rob and I have been looking forward to trying these as Juan Lopez is one of our favourite Marques.

Aroma: Soft milky coffee with delicate cedar notes, also a greenness to it that denotes their youthfulness.

Cut & Draw Good draw and well constructed cigar. The wrapper was on the light brown side of things. Not a massive amount of oils on the wrapper but enough to know the tobacco has been well prepared.

Flavours

1/3 Smooth milky flavours on the first couple of draws. The early part of the cigar produced a rather standard flavour and consistent direction to what I believe the French palette would enjoy (In many ways similar to the Quai D'Orsay) an off grey coloured ash was produced with large volumes of thick white smoke. Very smooth mouth feel and flavours of sweet cream. A mild cigar that has the potential to develop into a real classic.

2/3 The smooth cream flavour continues with an under developed hint of roasted coffee. It is in the second third I want my cigars to really show their style as they have had time to warm up and develop ....now time to shine. At this point Rob and I start to differ in opinions, I felt that the cigar just glides through this second third and doesn’t develop any more. Rob is still appreciative of the creaminess and youthful grass notes. His description is along the lines of La Gloria Cubana Tainos (sweet mothers milk...If you didn't know, he has an obvious fetish for lactating females) meets Cohiba Esplendido. Milk and honeyed dry grass.

I find myself wanting the intensity to increase as it did in the PCC Punch and Ramon Allones regional releases.

3/3 Becoming a little unstructured in the final third, a little bit dirty. Not finishing as well as one would have hoped for a cigar of this stature. Disappointing end for a brand that I really enjoy smoking.

Final Comment Good potential at the start of the cigar, but rather than developing its strength and flavours it goes the other way and structurally falls apart. Rob however believes that this cigar still show good potential but in a very different way to the Punch Super Robusto and Ramon Allones Estupendo. He is very keen to locate a half dozen boxes to put away for 5 years of ageing.

I personally would be demanding my money back.

We both agreed that this this cigar does not really fit into the flavour profile of what we would consider to be the classic Juan Lopez style. Juan Lopez to me means characteristic spice, dried fruit and floral notes which are at this point missing in the Juan Lopez Obus.

Drink Matched well with a strong flat white.

Cigar Scale Rob 88/100 Smithy 84/100

Smith Scale 7.5/13
