CelticBasque Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Imagine that, a fellow named Sean talking about Irish Whiskey. The wonders never cease... Anyway, I'm a big fan of Ireland's whiskey offerings and, in my opinion, for the price they beat out quite a few Blended Scotches for approachability and pairing with a cigar. One combination, that I plan to revisit soon, that I enjoyed very much some time back was an Ashton VSG Enchantment with some Jameson. Last night, I paired a Abr06 Party Short with some Tullamore Dew. This particular combination didn't impress me that much. The cigar was dead-on but the whiskey didn't want to compliment as much as distract from the enjoyment of the smoke. Then again, I'd already had quite a bit of wine before stepping out to enjoy my smoke so, who knows, maybe that influenced my razor-sharp palate. :-D A future purchase will be the Bushmills 21-Year Single Malt. It's spendy but, by accounts shared with me, this particular single malt looks and sounds to be spectacular. Anyone else enjoy Ireland's whiskeys or have any recommendations that I should be searching for?
habanablue Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Just wrote a short piece on Jameson for St Pats day. check out my blog for a link. Must admit that I am more of a fan myself of scotch, but will have t give the Irish versions more of a try.
anacostiakat Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I can recommend the following: Midletons - costly but the best. Red Breast Pure Pot Still Clontarf (black label) Connemara Tyrconnell Powers Paddys I also understand there is one called Green Spot which I have never had that is a great drink. All in addition to Jamesons 1780 of course.
DocRKS Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Bushmill's 16 year old Single Malt Irish Whiskey!!! Pair this with something like the Cohiba DC EL --- It is the thing that DREAMS are made of !! One of the finest Drink/Smoke combinations I have experienced...
jaylax5 Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I was fortunate to have a bottle of Midleton while in Ireland...it is the best Irish whiskey. This was back in 1998 and the bottle cost about 170 pounds...it came in a very nice wood box with a certificate. I was told that it is not exported. If I could get some more, I would in a heartbeat. I also am fond of a good bottle of Bushmills. Cheers.

It is around 150.00 last time I bought it w/o shipping of course.
fenian98 Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Tullamore Dew is my favorite for all around drinking. Bushmills 16yo has the complexity to stand up nicely with a cigar. I've tried almost all Irish Whiskeys, but for getting soused you just can't beat Tullamore Dew.

I can remember up to about 5 minutes after putting the bottle down, and then woke up on a hospital ward. Suffice to say me and Irish whisky don't get on anymore.
