anyone interested in a really terrific book on cuba should read 'looking for la bomba' by richard neill. richard was an english wine writer and a very good one who gave it all up a few years ago. i have never met him but quite a few mates know him well and speak very highly.

anyway, richard decided he wanted to learn a musical instrument, chose the bass, and decided to go to cuba to learn it and get on a stage within 12 months. he couldn't play anything before this. moved to santiago to do it and the result is a really lovely tale of his adventures. very amusing and full of great characters and gives a real insight into cuban life.

» Sort of like Peter Mayle's book, A Year in Provence?

i've not read mayle's book but i suspect that there would be similarities.

this on will appeal to anyone interested in cuba and especially anyone who has a musical bent or plays an instrument (which rules me out) and who just likes a good story well told.

Thanks for that tip, Ken. I should read that since I'm a bassist myself. I never "learned' the bass though. Had one lesson where I was shown how to play a scale. The rest was improvised. I'm left handed (a Mollydooker- good wine!) and play a right handed bass upside down.

Thanks for the tip, Ken. Nothing like a slice-of-life drama from Cuba for an aficionado like me. :-) And I even play an instrument...
