1f1fan Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 Montecristo Edmundo Size: Edmundo 52 x 135 Date: NOV 04 I just wanted to follow up on Ken’s review of the Monte Edmundo. I received 3 3-packs in a split and decided to try one out after some time resting in the humidor. The construction was perfect with an absolutely flawless wrapper with a great aroma. Draw was perfect for me, just the right amount of resistance – I hate draws that are like sucking air through a straw. Burn was good with minor touch-ups needed during the final third. I was a little worried about smoking these with less than one year of age but those worries were put to rest once lit. The taste was typical Montecristo – coffee/expresso/vanilla with some citrus notes in the background. Due to its youth there was quite a kick, and while it did lack complexity, overall it was a very enjoyable and tasty smoke. I have read some mixed reviews on these, more specifically complaints of the Edmundo being under-filled. Not so with the handful that I have smoked so far…but we know how inconsistent things coming out of Cuba can be sometimes. Looking forward to getting a box to age for 3-5 years, overall score on this - 89
thschrminm Posted September 1, 2005 Posted September 1, 2005 Nice review... I smoked one last week from a box of the UK May release and the cigar was very good and had that cappucino and vanilla type flavors to it... The construction on this one was solid and the draw was excellent... I have seen more of some newer ones be underfilled at times and the flavors are not the same as the first released batch that I have smoked... Newer ones I have smoked have had more citrus and wood characteristics to them compared to the older ones... The newer ones were late 04 and early 05 boxcodes...
Spud2 Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 » Montecristo Edmundo » Size: Edmundo 52 x 135 » Date: NOV 04 » » » Burn was good with minor touch-ups needed during the final third. smoked Nice review, I've had simular burn problems with a box from Dec 04. Not my favorite Monte, but close behind the #2 and #4. I'd rate'em a point or two lower.
El Presidente Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Excellent review :-) Ken is their number 1 fan. While I enjoy the flavour I am not enamoured withthe size but that is another point altogether. Underfilling is a diminishing problem but occasionally still around but not strictly a Cuban issue. I had a Perdomo not long ago....talk about underfilling!!!!
Echeck Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I have a box, and they are rolled nice and solid. I havent touched one yet, but I love the size and think they have promise
cf2112 Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I smoked a box from the original release and have a newer box resting, I think I'll have to break into it soon. Glad to see others liking these I thought I was the only one.
ironman Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I really like these as well, the only complaint I have had is the flavour is pretty one dimensional on the ones I have had...maybe with age they will develope more? Ironman
Loki Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 nice review. Smoked 1 or these a couple weeks ago and had a very similar experience. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on a box.
cgrsmkr Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I've had two of these so far (Oct '04 code I believe). I had the first one shortly after receving it, and the second about a week ago. The first one definitely seemed a bit young and underfilled. The second one, having a little more age on it and perhaps residing a better environment (mine), was much better. I'm not sure I'm ready to pull the trigger on a box of these just yet as I agree with Ironman as it still seemed a bit one-dimensional. But, a little more age sure seemed to benefit these.
Curmudgeon Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I've only had one, in April 2004, in Havana. It was extremely well made but had a bitter, dirty flavor. I don't really like the size, so I haven't been interested in them, but I'd like to hear more good reports.
Ken Gargett Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Sept 05. At a brilliant new place opened by Calem (port house). A restaurant that looks a bit like a couple of upmarket trailers put together but situated on the riverfront across from the old city of Oporto and with amazing views. This as solid and consistent as ever. Milk coffee appearance and taste and toss in a touch of vanilla and some citrus. These have been wonderfully reliable. 91.
shrink Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Just smoked another out of a AUG04 box. So far, very good and consistent smoke, with the crisp, citrus and vanilla flavors that Ken describes. I think that part of the problem is that people are expecting something comparable to the No. 2, which this is definitely NOT. It is a milder smoke, with much more subtle qualities. The complexity has been developing, month by month, but not the strength. My guess is that these will be highly favored when 3-5 years old. I find that I have started to develop a craving for them that nothing else can satisfy, a sure to sign to me of a cigar with potential.
harwellplant Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 the edmundo is one of my more favorite new releases. i, for one, really like the size and its characteristics. i have had a few that were hit and miss but, candidly, no more than the mc2's i have had within the past year.
DocRKS Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 This cigar has been a Night and Day experience for me.... I was very let down by a box of a very early release Edmundo and felt that Montecristo issued another dud cigar as others have cited in the reasons given above. So I put these away deep down in the Humi and frankly, forgot about them. Well, a few weeks ago I was motivated to rearrange this humidor and came upon the sleeping box of Edmundos...So I lit one up.......and I'm happy to say that I have been enjoying these a lot more today than when I first received them last summer. It seems the cigar has "tightened" up a bit - some of the reported looseness and underfilled characteristics seem to be things of the past as a nice rest has done wonders for this box of cigars.
gabebdog1 Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I bought a box from 04 and have smoked a few already but I have not found the pazzaz that I had read about have been kinda bummed, gonna let the rest sit for a while a long while and try them again:no:
nbuchanan2 Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I've enjoyed the few I've tried recently. I look forward to many more!
The Privateer Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I've enjoyed the few that I've had of this vitola. They seem much more subtle than the early release ones that I managed to try.
Ken Gargett Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 do love these and almost out (stop smiling rob, i've enough until i get to havana). had one last night and found it as good as usual but what set it apart was the amazing caramel aftertaste. very striong and hung around for a long time - much more so than i recall from this cigar or indeed from any other.
mr.harten Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Looks like I need to give these another try. I had one about 6 months ago from 04 and it was rather bland. Certainly wouldn't be the first time my first time I got a dud.
habanohal Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 How are the Edmundos in flavor compared to the #2? I have only smoked 5 of them. Never bought a box, for what I smoked was bland and not much too hoot about. But after a year of age atleast, how are they tasteing? I like the size and would like to get a box, but past issues have led me not to do so.
