El Presidente Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 OVU OCT 01 Thought I had better mow the top paddock with the ride on Sunday afternoon. I have a certain ritual to cutting grass. First I head to the humidor and pick a cigar which will last the distance. The top paddock only takes an hour so this Sunday I chose a St Luis Rey Lonsdale. After choosing the cigar I head to the bar and mix myself a 1.25 litre Mojito (Santiago rum, mint, sugar, soda, ice) which I place in my ORIS water bottle. The mower conveniently has a drink holder ;-) I then grab my radio and headphones, tune to the rugby game and place the industrial Ear Muffs over the top of the radio headphones. Onto the mower, swig of Mojito, Cuban cut the SLR and have a closer inspection while the engine warms up. Beautiful Lonsdale with a light tan wrapper and no veins. Appears well rolled and th test draw was fine...ever so slight pull required. Just as I like it. Torch the SLR and Gun the Greenfield to it's 11kmph top speed. By the top Mulberry tree the cigar was into stride. Mid to full bodied it was playing above itself and before long it came back to the classic mid body profile. The flavours were all dried lemon peel and chinese 5 spice. At their peak, the SLR Lonsdale along with the Sancho Panza Molinos are two of the most gloriously complex cigars to come out of Cuba. By the old Acacia we were nearing the halfway mark of the cigar and the flavour took on a slighly sweeter profile. Not sure if this had much to do with the Mojito but they worked perfectly together. The sweetness was of a whispy nature...you could almost taste it and just when you locked on...it woud dissapear leaving you with that dark coffee lemon zest edge. Around the River Red Gum and bringing it home, the rugby was commencing the second half, the Mojito the last quarter and the Lonsdale resembled a Partagas short. The SLR built a little in intensity and heat into the last quarter which was to be expected given the conditions it was being enjoyed. It never lost it's poise however and was enjoyable right to the end. Back to the house, switch off the mower, headphones off, last swig of the Mojito dregs. My wife surprises me with a "Hot day darling...make sure you keep drinking plenty of water." "Yes Sweetheart". Another perfect mowing experience :-D 89
culebra Posted March 16, 2005 Posted March 16, 2005 Great review Rob. I have never in my life before looked forward to mowing the grass
PigFish Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 I would have to second the SLR Lonnie but I must say that I prefer Rob’s current crop of D-1’s. Good cigar none the less with medium complexity and character; a rich and rewarding smoke. On the other hand I prefer to watch Lady Piggy mow the lawn and not spoil my smoking experience! The smell of fresh cut grass goes well with any cigar and it is more interesting to supervise Lady Piggy as I occasionally glace up from Investors Business Daily while making sure my ash grows to a uniform length!!! Good review Bwana! -P
Ken Gargett Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 i think that these were the sept mystery cigar but i have gone over and over the forum trying to find that thread - no doubt staring me in the face but i cannot find it. think that most reviewers, from memory, were a bit scathing (doing it an injustice?). i certainly wasn't - in fact, in retrospect, may have even been a bit generous. but i thought that, if i'm broadminded enough to tolerate rob, i can be broadminded enough to give these another go - not that they needed it as i did like the first. impressed again though perhaps not quite to the same extent. again, that leathery, this time leather-bound books, character. some attractive old chocolate and creamy coffee notes which wandered into the herbal as i moved thru the stick. quite a tight draw, not too much but probably just a little more than ideal. but the burn was even and slow. main handicap was a very hot finish. otherwise, liked it a lot. 88. would like to find those sept ones to update myself on the thoughts.
Colt45 Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 Great review! But, I can't help but be reminded of the "montessa incident"................
