» Colt you think your opinion is worth two bits? That must be comforting.;-)

Well Mel, in reality, I don't think my opinion is worth a dehydrated cow pie.

But I throw it out there, open for scrutiny, just the same.

I am still trying to get my head around all the Cubans, let alone Non-Cubans. I have had plenty of CAOs and Padrons, but there are many habanos I still have to get to. IN terms of boxes, I'll stick to habanos for now.

» When I started smoking cigars seriously, around 2002, I got many tips from

» fellow Swedes (lived there then), COJ among them (remember the newbie pack

» you and Zeke gifted me in Eslöv COJ? ;-) ), and these were all non Cubans.

» I found some that I liked then and still love now and have among my

» favorites, like ERDM Robusto Oscuro (Hon), LGC Wavell, Maria Mancini and

» others.

»

» Wanting to try Cubans as well, I brought around 20 singles from Spain

» (well known serious dealer, not a cheap online store) around 2003,

» choosing cigars recommeded by Theo Rudman in his Pocket Encyclopedia of

» Cigars (Partagas SD4, R&JExh4, HdM Ep2, MC4 among them). These cost twice

» or more the price of the non Cubans. After having tried them I was

» appalled by the bad quality. I let most of them rest for a year before

» smoking, as I'd heared they needed that to stabilise. But still, at least

» half of those 20 or so cigars were either plugged or totally tasteless.

»

» When they were good they were great but I couldn't understand why I should

» pay two-three times more more per cigar and then only have a 50% hit rate,

» when cigars who's taste I liked just as much (although different from the

» Cuban taste) had an almost 100% hit rate. For example, I have smoked 2-3

» bundles of the Consugegra seconds, costing $22 per bundle of 25 and the

» taste, after storing them a year or so is wonderful & only 1-2 in the

» bundle burn badly. ERDM (Hon), Maria Mancini, CAO Brasila etc cost $3-5

» per cigar and are never bad and suit my taste profile, and economy,

» perfectly.

»

» So, not having an abundant amount of money I decided to leave the Cubans

» and concentrate on discovering all other cigars available in a price that

» suited my economy.

»

» I smoke Cubans when I come across them and have recently smoked more and

» more, especially Petit Coronas of which a few are some of my absolute

» favorites. I have learnt more about them as well, MRN's book and the

» importance of keeping them closer to 65% rather than 70% RH. The quality

» also seems better now than it was a few years ago, so maybe I can try

» more, given I get a pay raise and have storage room to store them for a

» few years...:-D

»

» Speaking of that I just finished a Bolivar Belicosos Finos which was a

» strong, peppery, cedar and vanilla tasting cigar I'd love to have a box

» of..... DogWatch Cigar Radio was my herf companion for this

» tonight..Thanks Dale & Bob for a great show. Love it since I found it a

» month or so ago...

»

» So, in conclusion, up to know I have found Cubans haven't given me the

» value for money non Cubans do. I love the Cuban cigars when they are on

» but also love medium-full bodied Maduro non Cibans (mostly Hondurans) with

» tastes of coffee, cocoa and lots of complexity. I'll probably buy more

» Cubans in the future but just as probably never stop buying non Cubans

» (especially when living here in Australia where prices are so high and USA

» the best place to buy cigars from).

»

» Cheers

Dear Magnus I understand your frustration with Cuban cigars. I was telling a buddy the other day that I hate tight draws and rarely ever get them on the NCs. I prefer the flavor of the Cuban tobacco but deplore the construction issues.

Colt my man I treasure your post that are always brimming with intelect.

Yeah, that's me - the voice of reason amidst chaos...........

1. No, I don't have any money.

2. No, I'm still not going into the woods with you.

3. Are you on the bottle already this morning?
