Ken Gargett Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 never been a great one for cognac - had two that really sang and the rest, i'm still a little ambivalent about (the two were a spectacular 1929 pruniers at a little restaurant in bangkok and the 1964 - i think - delamain while in the barossa). it may be that vintaged cognac appeals more to me or that i just don't understand the stuff. have just rec'd a set of samples to taste - from martell. the vsop, cordon bleu and the XO (impressively packaged). have not had a chance to try them yet but was wondering how these rated with genuine cognac lovers.
Colt45 Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Can't give an opinion on the Martell, but I'm constantly amused by the fact that the member who requested the wine / alcohol forum rarely uses it.......
Ken Gargett Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 » Can't give an opinion on the Martell, but I'm constantly amused by the fact » that » the member who requested the wine / alcohol forum rarely uses it....... fair point about that forum. call it chrissy hangover and boine laziness. as for nathan and his freebie comments, it is called work. work being a word that no dictionary on the planet will place anywhere near the word 'ayala'.
Ken Gargett Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 » More Freebies Ken? » » :- i might take this opportunity to point out, since i have been so unfairly disaparaged this morning, that i received approx 60 items of work per week.

Which equates to twelve items (work week) to be sampled each day. It all just keeps getting clearer........

El Presidente Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 :rotfl: :rotfl: Good to see you have failed one of your new years resolutions Colt :-D
anacostiakat Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Used to be a big Remy drinker in my yout. :-P Wasnt much of a fan of the Martel but honestly have not drank it in many a year and dont drink much cognac. I think I may grab some Delamain this weekend. :-D
Colt45 Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 » Good to see you have failed one of your new years resolutions Colt no, no, you've got it all wrong! I'm on Ken's side - no doubt he's got the toughest job of anyone I've Never met. I sing his praises - HE IS KEN, HEAR HIM ROAR!
Ken Gargett Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 be fair. this morning i have a few alsatian gewurz's to do then wines from cullens, jasper hill, castagna etc. will it never end?
CelticBasque Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Well... I don't know much about all these resolutions and such... .:-P But I did pickup a bottle of Martell VSOP a few weeks ago and have enjoyed it very, very much! The difference between this and the Couvoisier VSOP is quite outstanding in my opinion. The Courvoisier was enjoyable but lacked the warmth and depth of the Martell. In this case, the color difference between the two is a decent indication of the eau de vies and age that went into each bottle... My next cognac purchase will be the Cordon Bleu but that may have to wait some time as I've recently been buying quite a bit of Bourbon and Scotch and now I haven't sufficient space for all the lovely investments! :-D Tonight's fare: Glenlivet 15-year French Oak Reserve.....
Ken Gargett Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 i'm supposed to look at the martell vsop and also the cordon bleu tonight. the latter has always had a good name. i was surprised that it was so close in price to the xo. tried the xo but i must say, while i can see the qualities, personally i don't get that excited. but i would imagine for those that enjoy cognac, it would be a cracker. we will see after the vsop and CB.

Colt45 Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Tried some Remy Martin vsop last night. Once it opened up, there were nice notes of honey and peach. Decent depth, with a very nice mouthfeel - coating, but not overly thick. I don't drink much cognac, so I've no idea, but would love to know, how this one compares to the others mentioned here.
log1k Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I am a big cognac fan.....to date the best one I've had is Paradise by Hennessy. Its roughly $500 a bottle, luckily a local Cigar Bar/Resturant serves it for $35 per snifter....
