Yet another peice of crappy legislation on the ballot this year in California. Proposition 86 wants to tax all tobacco products, supposedly to give the money to hospitals to aid in the cost of tobacco related disease. Read the fine print, and you find that only about 10% of the tax will actually do this. They also make it sound like a carton (10 packs) of cigs will go up a couple dollars, when in actuality each single pack will go up that much. Hey, I dont smoke cigs, but still, thats kinda rough. Most important, though, is that cigar tax will go up EIGHTY TO NINETY PERCENT. I would be most sad to see my favorite local cigar retailers go belly up because of this.

To all non-Californians, I apologize for the rant, but I wanted to get the word out to my neighborhood cigar pals.

these kinds or props always pass too. People who don't think just say "sure they should pay more what do I care?" and they vote yes. Hopefully you have a 50% turnout rule on this one....

I used to be in CA. so I know what you are talking about. Remember CA is just first to bring that crap around other states will follow. We had a state constititional amendment on the ballot today giving property tax relief to seniors. The last clause was the exclusion clause that stated if the wealth/income was above an amount, set by the congress, the amenddment would not apply. More bull **** government money grabbing and cloke and dagger deception.

As George Harrison said: "If you drive a car, we'll tax the street and if you walk, we'll tax your feet".

I don't think there is any reason to apologize. If it passes here it gives momentum to a concept that smokers should pay for (and will) all the ill of the world; an endless pot of gold to ravage anytime the politicans need more money. Think it won't happen to you? WHen is the last time youheard a politican say the had enough money?

Polls show it losing. Maybe there is some common sense in California after all.

I have a friend that runs a B&M in SoCal who will probably be put out of business if this ridiculous tax passes. I'm glad I don't live in Cali anymore but like the others have said: if it passes, it'll soon be at a state near you.

I landed in LA this Monday, and walk over to a Cigar shop in BentWood. I saw the add for Prop 85....I could not belive it. Also I have read about one city in Cali that you could not smoke inside, nor outside. On the other hand I was happy to find Cuban cigars in this shop....the prices where very high.

I love this city, but it been kind of hard to find a good spot to smoke. ]

Carlos, last time I was in L.A. I was lucky enough to be invited to cigar night at

City Club downtown - fantastic! Alas, it was more than likely a once in a lifetime

experience.

The club was called the Montecristo.....and I had a Montecristro No. 2. I
