CIGARHead Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Man what a day. My pops, me and one of my lil brothers skipped work today and drank a fair amout of beer and caught some monsters. All Red Drum...locals call them Red's; damn good eating, but unfortunatley all the ones we caught were well overlimit. A few were not more than an inch overlimit, but with all the beer we had consumed it was wise to let them go and not risk it. Here are a few pics:
kluck Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Nice fish, what size are those its hard to tell from pictures. A few years back we were fishing for redfish out of Houston, I caught one a little over 40 inches and a little over 25lbs. At that time you could keep one redfish over 28 inches.
Colt45 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Man, I'm jealous. The only thing I'll be fishing for is my winter coat. I can still drink beer. Inside. With the heat on.

Ken Gargett Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 nice fish. they look a little like an aussie jewfish. what sort of tackle? interesting concept, upper limits. in oz, we have almost solely minimum limits (flathead an exception). once a fish reaches a certain size, fair game.

Minimum for red's is 18" tail pinched and 27" tail pinched....1 fish per person per day. One of the best tasting meats you can get off a fish. Back about 15 or so years ago, the almost were no existent because of gill nets. Since that type of netting has been outlawed and the limit and size restrictions, red's have seen a huge comeback. We had very light tackle that me and my brother caught ours on, but that 40" HOSS that my dad caught he was using a bit heavier of a rod and reel. That sucker would have spooled the light tackle.:-D
andymiami Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 Daaaaammmmn, nice Red's! Did you catch them on live bait or artificial? This photo is one of the nice ones I caught in Pine Island Sound on the West Coast of FL a few years ago. I think this one was caught on a chunk of ladyfish. I've been working WAY too hard these last two years. I need to have me one of those Fridays like you did! Congratulations!

We caught all on live finger mullet...except for that big mofo, we caught him on a mullet head. For that type of fishing(fishing the rock jetties) where the current is ripping - the big red's look for a hearty meal. I mostly fish inshore creeks and flats and 80% of the time use artificial. Berkley Gulp Shrimp and Jerk Shads mostly.
cvm4 Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 Very nice Austin! I'm jealous here at the size of your Reds .... And they are some good eating!
