Well Armed Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 I like Punch Punch and RyJ Ex#4. Thinking about getting some '98 Ex#4 and 1997 Punch Punch. Is this a bad idea? I didn't smoke them back then so I have no idea what they are like from those years. Anybody here have anything to say?

Have you smoked the mid to late 90's stuff yet in any marca/vitola?
Well Armed Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 I have not had these particular vitolas in late '90's vintages. I have had RyJ Coronas and Churchills. No vintage Punch of any sort. I have heard the RyJ #4 ages very well though and it seems like something that could be tasty and, well, and, that is all I have to say really.

When buying older cigars, how they were stored over the years makes a big difference.
habanohal Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 TO be honest, what I believe is that if you are not the true "conasuer" you might not even be able to tell the differance from aged to recent. Just of late I have started to notice the differance. It all started with a 2000 cab of HDM from Rob. Compared with 3 other cabs from 05 and o6 ( 2- 50 cabs, 1 -25) A more refined tasted. I flipflop from time to time on what I want. Sometimes its finesse of an aged Habano, and sometimes I want the in your face sm,ack of a recent production. I do find though after 5 years the Punch Punch starts to loose a little. Not so if you can get the Punch Black Prince

I am no help at all because I have had great and atrocious examples of each from those years. If me, I would locate Punch SS2 if you want a Punch. If you want an Exhibicion No 4 from that period IT MUST BE A CABINET OF 50 At that time there was a quality difference between Cab and dress box.

If the Punch Punch are anything like the '98 Punch Coronas I have, you are in for a real treat. A more flavorful cigar than the '04 Punch Punch box that I have. However, I have not had any of the Punch Punch with that much age or from that year.

Rob if I had any more SS#2's it would be considered greedy. I guess I am just trying to branch out and try other aged stuff, which I appreciate very much usually. Ack it I'll get some '06 Boli CGs instead.

After your post yesterday I selected a March 06 Punch Punch Yesterday. It was a good cigar, not great. It certainly did not have the "oomph" that I have come to associate with 06. Nice creaminess, slight sweetness but a touch boring overall. I have been spoilt of late.
shrink Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Can't comment on the aged RyJ X4's, but the '98 Punch Punches I've had were very, very good. PM for source. By the way, in terms of boxcodes, look for early to mid 98's, preferably from Fernando Roig factory FRG.

If you like Punch & want variety, I just picked up some FEB 98 PC del Punch that are excellent.

kjellfrick Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I just bought a box of '97 Punch Punch, but so far I've only smoked one of them. I really enjoyed this cigar. It gave me plenty of smoke, an impeccable draw and lots of good flavours. Never had a fresh one to compare with, but it certainly hadn't lost all of it's flavours with age. Looking forward to slowly finish this box in the coming years.:-)
PigFish Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 I think that the vintage argument largely depends on the premium paid. If the cigars are priced in line with current stock the age may make the cigars worth while. If the RyJ E-4's are from a certain isle in the Med... well I have sampled those and I would not buy them again! Just FYI!
