Ken Gargett Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 » Ken. That is a big Blue. Seen bigger. Especially this time a year when the » mullet run occurs. I may just be a fishing snob, but I hate like hell when » I hook one of them blues. The shitfish of the ocean. But for a bunch of » ametuers such as yourselves, a big score. Way to go Kenny Boy!! off the beach, light gear, they are a heap of fun. if freshly eaten, within the hour, they are terrific.

You are right though, damn good fighting fish - which is why I do love fishing. I see you cut his throat to bleed him...so you must of chowed down shortly after the pic.:-D Light tackle is all I use and agree much more fun than heavy horse gear. I hope you have more luck and post some more fishin pics
Ken Gargett Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 I see you cut his throat to bleed him...so » you must of chowed down shortly after the pic.:-D bleeding them is mandatory here if you want to eat them at any stage (tho it helps to concentrate - currently with one finger bandaged to the hilt as not paying attention and knife slipped and through to the bone on left index finger. many new words learnt very quickly - not on that fish). going to play havoc with casting this week. no worms at all in that one and i have never ever heard anyone find worms in a tailor. will ask about but expect not to hear of it. it does happen with jewfuish here (and others) - they are a large, similar type of fish though tend to congregate in holes rather than travel about like tailor. they are trying hard to find out if our tailor, which travel up our east coast in winter and then after passing fraser island, disappear do actually cross the ocean to your side. many suspect they do. it would help explain why yours get bigger but unless they pick up the worms on route, that might suggest they do not.

Ken, I have mostly seen the round worm in BIG blues and amberjacks. Totally harmless, just a bit gross. Hard to say if they pick them up on the way to the states. Interesting...how long do the tailor disapear for? It almost seems blues are here year round.

It almost » seems blues are here year round. winter fish here. you might catch a few out of season but expect what we call choppers (smallish tailor, about a foot long) to start late may/june and then through to the bigger ones august/sept and more often these days, october but after that they are gone. they start down south part of nsw and move up the coast. once they move passed fraser in mid queensland, they are gone until the next year. let you know how we go this week.
Ken Gargett Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 rob has posted this elsewhere but imagine no one looks at rob's posts (apols to those who mistakenly wandered into one of rob's posts and have seen it). this was from last week on fraser island. it is far and away the biggest tailor any of us had seen ever. caught by a mate (sadly not me) who two years ago didn't know which end of a rod to hold (i suspect he had about 50kg line on). we all got really good fish but not quite this size. we often hear that the ones caught on the other side of the big pond are larger than what we see. i am wondering how this would compare? it was caught on the beach with a 4 hook rig and a pilchard. my best catch for the week was a large ray which took me an hour and dragged me a kilometre along the beach. mean looking thing and after the steve irwin incident, cut him loose once finally got him.
