I tried my first Ramon Allones Gigantes today. It looked and felt fantastic.

It had a very nice draw, but alas, very little smoke volume. I smoke, I look,

no smoke, I add flame, no smoke, I'm perplexed.

I took a look at the foot, and noticed a small hole in the ash, approximately 2mm

in diameter - just off center. I smoke on, but to no avail - same as above.

So, using a pair of cigar scissors, I snipped off an inch or so, only to see the same

hole. It seemed there was a channel running the length of the cigar. I relit, and

while there was just slightly more smoke, I had overworked it by this point, and

had to abort.

I've never seen this in any cigar before, and am assuming this "channel" was the

cause of the poor performance. Has anyone had a similar experience?

This is no condemnation of the RAG - it just happened to be the unlucky cigar.

This exact thing happened to me last night. With me, it was an aged Monte #2. Plenty of air made its way into my mouth, but precious little smoke. I noticed a hole in the foot just as you describe above. I smoked about two inches and was ready to quit.

I've also created this problem in the past by trying too hard to open up a cigar with a tight draw. Inserting a thin "poker" into the cut head between 1 and 3 inches has worked well to remedy a virgin tight draw. But, out of desperation, I've unintentionally pushed a "poker" all the way to the burning foot until the ash was on my lap:surprised:. Nothing but air would come throgh the hole then. It's easier to suck room air throgh a straw than to draw smoke throgh an otherwise tight cigar.

Not to rub it in, but I had a RAG from '03 on Friday that was out of this world good. Perfect construction and was beaming with charred wood and dark fruits.

Curious. Hopefully there will be a definitive answer.......

I can remember my first RAG. I thought it was the best cigar I had ever tried. When I asked Rob if he had any more of that cigar which was three years old he said yes. I was shocked when he said yes. I asked how he still had such aged stock and he replied that no everbody likes the RAG. I am still shocked that not every one loves the RAG. I do.:-)

I'm working on a box from 02 that is fantastic. Unfortunately, a few singles from 01 taste bland in comparison. With talk on some cigar board about how good the 06s have been, I'll be looking for a fresh box of these soon.

Yes, I heard that Ken Gargett (our very own Kenny G) was at a seance recently, and did a pretty good job of "channeling" a 1970 Davidoff Chateau La Tour. It was pretty convincing when he blew smoke out of his arse.
