EL Shootout!

Recommended Posts

Over the weekend I had myself a little EL shootout with 3 contenders - Sublime, Partimide, and PSD3 (original). Partimide was first. Strong as all get up. Powerful and smacking. Extremely satisfying. Wish I had more.

Next up, my first Sublime out of a fiver I got back in 2004. Now, I had never smoked one before because, well, they are so f'in big! I've smoked longer, but this thing is so large in RG that it put me off. I don't want a horse **** in my mouth. Well, I was blown away with the smooth richness of bean flavors from the Sub. All I kept thinking was, wow, this is so goo, and I have been smoking it for like 5 hours! Never harsh, even at the nub. Quite strong at the end, but smooth as hell. One of the best cigars I have smoked in a long time - and I had a bad attitude towarss it going in. Like, I didn't want to like it. but oh how I did.

Next was the PSD3. Now this thing was darker than night and hard as a rock. Wicked box press. Rustic appearance. Almost as if it was a warning to the uninitiated as to the road ahead. It started out right off the bat as strong and a little harsh. By halfway it mellowed in harshness but gained in strength towards the end where it was a full powered tonic of monkey brains and ***** slaps. Toasted tobacco tried to rear its head but was crying fro pepper in its eyes. It actually turned another corner at the very last 1.5" and became very smooth and gave me a glimpse of what it wants to become. For about 20 minutes there it was most excellent. Maybe another year and these just might be ready to go into the rotation of special occasion smokes.

The winner? Sublime by a mile. I wish these weren't so damned expensive. Because they are worth every penny. Which means it is worth buying a box. Which means the wife gets a bigger birthday present to make up for how much this one box of cogars would cost.

I'm glad to see a good review on the Sublimes. Everywhere I see everyone is complaining how overrated and overhyped they are. I mean they really are very expensive and I haven't tried one yet. I figured since I paid so damn much for them, I might as well let it sit for several years and get as much as I can from it.

So there they are 10 singles that I bought just sitting and waiting in my humi! :-P

I only had a fiver and I smoked one. If I were you I would fire one up just to see whether you think they need to sit around all by themselves and not get smoked. Treat yourself. I tend to stockpile special cigars and never smoke them, saving them for a special occasion. Well everyday alive is reason to celebrate so get to smoking. Have an EL shootout of your own! It is fun. I'm glad I did it.

Nice comparison Well Armed. Not a fan of the Sublime, but I have one left sitting in the humidor waiting for that right moment. Maybe sometime this fall, say after my beloved Trojans knock off UCLA or Notre Dame. ;-) My complaint with them is that they are so damn thick... I get lockjaw trying to smoke the darn thing. Hopefully when I smoke mine, I will taste some of those same wonderful flavors. Thanks again for the shoot out!

From a flavour perspective the Sublime was ...sublime :-D We have none remaining so I can comment on it openly without fear of being seen as a shill :lookaround:

Putting the size issue aside (it is not for everybody), the flavour kaleidescope this cigar delivered is immense. I can only comment on the experiences from our local (domestic) FOH crew....it has been (alongside the Cohiba DC LE) the most enjoyed, sought after and more importantly "repeatedly purchased" Limited Edition Cigar of all.

I can fairly assess what the punter enjoys when he is prepared to pay $1200 AUD regularly to smoke this cigar because he enjoys it.
