Tubos

I'm looking for a little education on Tubos. What are the advantages and disadvantages? For example, why would one choose Siglo VI tubos instead of an ordinary box (or vice versa)?

Also, I assume people age Tubos in the tubes just as they arrived. How does this affect the aging process? I've heard it slows it down significantly, which makes we wonder: what's the point?

Any wisdom will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There are two schools of thought on aging....one school is that the more air a cigar gets, the better it ages. The other school believes the opposite.

The theory of Min Ron Nee, author of the awesome Illustrated Encyclopedia of Post-Revolution Havana Cigars, sounds the most plausible to me. He believes that increased exposure to air (but still with proper humidity) will make the ammonia and other nasties evaporate from the cigar faster, therefore reducing the sick period, making it smokable quicker, and excellerating the aging process...to a point. MRN believes that eventually, all that oxygen exposure will cause the tobacco to start losing the volatile oils that give it its flavor, so in the end it makes it age faster but with less flavor as the years go on.

Now his theory behind tubos, cabinets (which also limit airflow), and glass jar humidors is that the decreased oxidation will make the ammonia take longer to purge from the cigar, but in the end will preserve more of the essential oils of the tobacco, and over a longer time make for a richer, better-aged cigar.

So it's all a matter of time...if you wanna smoke them sooner, take them out of the tube. But if you want to keep them around to age for five or more years, keep them in the tube, because they'll age slower, but better.

My own personal opinion is that tubes make for a nice presentation if you are

giving them away, and they're great protection if you're going to stick a couple

in your pocket for a short road trip.

But I'd prefer non tubes if I'm going to put them in the humidor to keep for

myself.

I've found that keeping cigars in tubes in the humidor keeps them a little moist

for my preference - but I haven't done a long term test of this theory.

But the bottom line for me would be I'll take whichever are of the best quality,

regardless of packaging.

» Thanks, Black Plague. I like the Soundgarden signature. I miss that band

Me too......I got real excited when Audioslave came out and I heard Chris Cornell was their lead singer, but now I'm a bit disappointed with them. If you ever get the chance to download some of Audioslave's live covers of old Soundgarden stuff....DON'T! Cornell's still got the voice, but hearing Morello trying to bust out Kim Thayil's chops just sounds pathetic :lol2:

Thanks for the tip. I was excited about Audio Slave as well, but they're just okay. Shame - Soundgarden was awesome and Rage was pretty damn good too.
