New Upmann Mag50\'s a Disappointment?

Recommended Posts

Although they are still very fresh, most of the reviews I've read for the new Mag50 EL's so far have been not overly positive, especially considering the price. Do you think they will still be a big seller just because they are an "EL", or will they sit on vendors shelves and come down in price significantly in the next 4-8 months???

BTW....the reviews I've seen for the new Monte D's and RyJ Petit Piramides have been a bit better, but not outstanding.

Keep in mind Dragon that when the Upmann Tang Monarchs were released they were generally regarded as woefull. They sat on the shelves throughout Canada and the Asia Pacific divans going nowhere until the last 18 months when they were "re-discoverd".

I haven't tried one of the new Upmann LE and won't have an opportunity until next week. The most disappointing LE release to date (for me personally) were the Cohiba Pirimides. Tried another yesterday...BLECH! I hope time takes care of them.

my most disappointing EL to date - Monte C.

also worth recalling is that when Vegas Robaina first hit the shelves, despite all the good will for the man himself, the reviews were all a bit underwhelming - more hope than substance. a few years have done a lot.

Have you tried one recently? MUCH better than when initially released.

I had the Mag50 and will it is obviously WAY too young, definitely shows lots of promise. Tastes just like a beefed up Mag46.

Here is a review that I did in case anyone is interested:

H. Upmann Magnum 50 EL (2005)

Orgin: Cuba

Year: 2005

Length: 160mm (6.29")

Ring: 50

Construction: EXCELLENT - Firm with a little give but NOTHING like the spongy, under filled 04s

Burn: Razor sharp

Ash: VERY tight. Mostly white with some graphite coloring in spots and tiny specks of white dots

Pre-light draw: Very good. Not too loose w/ decent tobacco flavor.

I decided that it was too nice a day not to have another smoke and I was disappointed that I couldn't smoke it on my way back from Pa this morning, so I went out to the yard and brought along the Mag50 and a beer (and Buster of course).

The Mag50 had a medium dark chocolaty wrapper with minimal veining and a nice triple cap. In the beginning there was nice amount of smoke and straight forward but young tobacco flavor. Hints of grassiness at first, then a mild spice and mild tobacco flavors that carried through to the end. Obviously still VERY, VERY young but very Mag46 like. The "EL" for the Mag50 must be from the size because the blend seemed exactly like a fresh Mag46.

I sat and talked to my neighbor while her husband replaced a rail on his deck. We talked briefly about the cigar (she noticed I kept turning it sideways to stare at it). So I showed her the "firm ash trick" by standing the Mag50 on its end and telling her about the nuances of the ash. She seemed as interested as Niccole does when I try to talk to her about cigars but was impressed, none the less, by my showmanship.

The ash fell off at about 2 1/2-3 inches but that may have been from my playing around with standing it up.

In summation, the Mag50 seems like a regular production Mag46 but enlarged. Not sure what the "EL" price will command but price not withstanding, should be a keeper.

Enjoy bros!

Thanks for the review!

I thought that ELs were just the same blend + fancy maduro wrapper? I don't remember where I heard that so I could be completely wrong. Please feel free to correct me if you know what the deal is.

As promised, a review of the Mag 50 EL.

Blah, blah, blah it's a Mag 50 EL.

Couple of Mojitos to start us off. Got through the crab & parmesan souffle double quick & scoffed the Manx lobster in seconds. All the while downing the Fouard Brothers best as we went.

That was hard work. :-)

Selected the Mag. Well constructed, if slightly curved.

Cuban cut, nice pre-light draw.

No drama lighting.

Strange cabbage flavours for the first half inch. Yuk!

Like 15 day old boiled cabbage. Reminded me of the military grub. ****.

Then slightly spiced honey & coffee. Better.

This thing's not too bad thinks I. Got potential in time.

As it burned on it got better & ended up tasting a bit like Toblerone but not so painfull on the roof of your mouth.

So, a good smoke with lots of potential & should be great with a few years on it.

I did think whilst smoking it that, apart from the start, it wasn't as bad as some had described but I thought "Yanks, couldn't find thier arse in the dark, most of 'em".

Anyway, I come down this morning & tidy up the debris & to my shock and

horror! The band on the butt is a bloody Montecristo!!

Bugger! Apologies to the Yanks. It is I who cannot find his arse in the dark.

I have smoked & reviewed a Montecristo D EL Maduro!

Note to self: Select cigar PRIOR to knocking back 3 Mojitos & 2 bottles of the Fouard boys brew & some ancient Port.

Damn!

Usually, they are a different blend with a true maduro wrapper but the Mag50 WAS supposed to be a regular production smoke that they decided to try to gouge us on by slapping an EL band on.

I say enough is enough with the EL pricing....no more for me. BTW - Where are my Epi Esp? :-P

Rob - LOL! She's not that attractive :-D

I like to try most all of the EL's and many times not overly impressed. I am very impressed with the HDM Ep. Esp. It is the best of the EL's in the past two years. Have not had the Mag. 50 and not to sure when I will.

had one about a month ago and wonder why i bothered. if i had a mother-in-law and then these would be hers. strange thing is that i seem to be more positive about many of the LE's than a lot of members of the forum but i'll be buggered if i can get excited about these.

  • 3 years later...

I had Mrs Supermodel work the street corners for a couple of hours, ripped her off for the $$'s earnt & bought 2 Mag 50's.

They were flown in last week under heavy guard.

I shall be trying 1 tonight & will let you know how it goes.
