Birthday gift Wine

Recommended Posts

My Friend is a big wine man spending up to $7,000 a month at auctions.

Since my birthday will be on Sunday hitting the big 37 he gave me two bottles of wine.

He told me there are excellent years and make's.

Would like to get some feedback on them from the wine pro's here.

1) Morey ST Denis Cuvee des Grives 1993

2) Chateau Margaux Grand Vin Premier Grand Cru Classe 1983

Both are French wines.

jimmy, the margaux is brilliant. widely recognised as the best wine of a good vintage. 1983 in bordeaux largely overlooked as 1982 was spectacular but some excellent wines. sounds like the sort of guy who would have stored it well and so you should be in for a real treat. i bought a bottle back when i lived in the states but some bastard on the warves stole it - i hope he choked.

for the morey, a lot of people rated 1993 in burgundy very highly. i never did, thinking them a bit chunky but have seen quite a few in last 6 months that have looked good and i think that the better wines are now coming into their prime. most will be/should be drunk up soon but not all. i can't track down the grives (there is a greves in beaune but that would not be it). you have not given the maker's name. could tell you more, hopefully, with that.

Here's some more info Ken.

1993 Grand vin de Bourgogne Mise Au Domaine Appellation Village Controlee Domaine Ponsot

1983 Margaux Appellation Margaux Controlee

Chateau Margaux Proprietaire A Margaux - France

Hope this helps Ken just starting to learn about wines so i don't have a clue ..

okay, ponsot a very good producer. village wine, so not the equivalent in rank, if you like of the bordeaux.

i'd be opening this soon, and i'd love to hear how it goes, while if you look after the margaux, it could even go another decade. perhaps one for your fortieth or even fiftieth. must be a good pal to come up with those bottles.

Someone said the same thing to me as him being a great friend .

They also told me the 1983 at auction can go for $450 to $500 a bottle and if you can find a restaurant that even has them they could sell for $850 per bottle.

I am afraid to even open it LOL if this is true.

Maybe i will just open the 1993 tomorrow at my birthday dinner at my parents house and save the 1983 bottle.

What to do ..

jimmy, those prices sound about right. i'd reckon go with the 93 and then have the 83 at a really special event, not that your borthday is not just that. but you really need to make certain it is stored well. be a shame to ruin it.

Had the 93 tonite it was great very smooth with a little bite with sweet fruity flavors Ken.

The 83 will be in my wine cooler were I store my cigars.

Thanks Ken for the info.
