Italy 1 Australia 0

The Italians won this game. The 1-0 score says that is so.

However, the Australian team rose up to the challenge of containing and outplaying one of the soccer world's top teams today.

This one was a heartbreaker.....Penalty Kick in the 93rd minute for Italia !:crying:

Hold your head up Soccer-Roos..... You stepped onto the world's stage and you proved you certainly belong there......

I had 2 cigars set aside for after the game - depending on the result...

I'm putting the Dunhill back into the Humidor and will find solace with my Siglo VI.:-(

I agree....

The Aussies were robbed of extra time to win or lose the game in the 2 - 15 minute sessions after regulation...

FIFA needs to begin to bring the best referees to the World Cup instead of filling quotas and bringing 1 or 2 from every participating country...

If they don't then it only shows that they want bad refs to be able to manipulate the tournament and make sure the historic teams get through...

It isn't fair for all teams that work 4 years to get there and then have a below par referee take it away...

Can anyone say REPLAY for soccer!!!

:no::surprised::no:

So was the red card that Italy got he was not even over the line bad call.

But Aus played hard Italy played bad this game we all know they are a better team anyway.

Hats off to the Aus team for putting up a great fight they were fun to watch all through the Cup.

agree re the red card.

i thought we did a terrific job but i don't think we can say we were robbed - we don't want to sound like whinging poms for a start.

my immediate thought was penalty and if on replays, it looked dodgy, well hard luck. could not see how that was a red card.

more relevant was that the italians did a brilliant job in defence and we never really looked like scoring. we might have scrambled one in during the last thirty minutes but the italians looked like they knew how to score. we did not.

i am now supporting anyone playing the poms.

was viduka carrying the drinks? i certainly did not see him do anything useful. shame for neill that he gave the penalty away as he was by far our best all series. he should have been captain from the start. viduka couldn't lead electicity along a cord.

I am with Ken on this one.

We played well but did not take our chances. When you have your foot on the oppositions throat....finish it off. Congratulations Italy.

Lisa is still inconsoleable. Someone send her a nice e-mail

and while on the subject of foot on throats, great to see that the world's press has jumped on board the anyone but the poms campaign.

a Brazilian paper declared, that the WAGs (English wives and girlfriends), “anorexics addicted to shopping with hollow lobotomised heads”, were there to “detract from their team’s poor football skills”.

Die Welt noted: “Sven-Göran Eriksson announced that the match was a matter of life and death, an obvious exaggeration. But since he brought the subject up, it’s worth noting that the English are still alive.”

For El Nacional it was “easy to believe Sven when he said the best is yet to come because the white flag with the cross of Saint George suffered in the face of lesser rivals . . . unlike the subjects of Queen Elizabeth . . . Ecuador went out with their heads held high”. England’s was “an embarrassing performance from the country that invented football”.

England is “a timid team”, El Comercio said, while for ABC Beckham’s kick “saved a team that was ordinary and conservative from beginning to end”.

The captain’s tummy upset led El Pams to the conclusion that England’s performance was “a goal and a pile of vomit”, while it also mocked: “England continues its absurd World Cup campaign. With each passing game, it gets worse”.

Great analysis Ken. Would have loved to have seen this for 93 minutes of 11 v 11. Hats off to Australia...a great effort. Once Italy went down a man, they were basically picking and choosing when to make a run at the goal.

One thing I have noted, don't know what broadcasters everyone gets, but here in the States the announcers suck. They have absolutely no emotion. Only seen one game that Tommy Smith has called and it was fantastic. All the rest have been stiffs.

there was a wonderful simpsons episode when soccer came to town - you can imagine - the promo promised "low scores, draws" etc etc. had kent brockman in one commentary box and next to him a south american doing the same game. difference was hysterical. then they had a soccer riot with groundskeeper willie showing them how to do it properly.

The Italians are the one team that I truly can't stand. I can't stand they way they fall over at the mere hint of a touch. None of them seems capable of recovering from a lovetap. Say what you want about the poms, but at least they don't dive. Just look at Rooney and how stays on his feet and tries to make plays in the penalty box instead of relying on the refs to call a foul.

Kudos to the Socceroos for a fine showing at this World Cup. I still don't like Kewell, but I'm a big fan of Cahill and Everton. Would have loved to see him play alongside Rooney.

I understand hating the Italians but if it is only because of diving then there are many others you must hate as well....Portugal, Spain, France, the list goes on. A blanket statement that the English don't dive is a bit laughable...Owen, Beckham and Joe Coles are professional divers. Rooney is tough as nails - he would go through a brick wall for a goal. Him barrelling through two defneders in the last game was just classic.

I just wish the Italians had a few more like Gattuso - snarling dog is a perfect nickname.

I love this time every four years - great passion.

»WELL, IF MUST BE TRUE IF THE PAPER SAYS SO!!! HERE IS ANOTHER RECENT ARTICAL THAT MAY CLARIFY THE RESULT:

"An Australian man has been arrested in Italy for an assult on a local man after the world cup soccer (football) match between Australia and Italy. Witnesses say the Australian was 20m away when the incident happened. The victim fell to the ground, suffered a fractured skull and cardiciac arrest, and has developed diabetes as an result of the incident. He is expected to recover in a few minutes."

NOTHING MORE TO SAY :-D
