Hi, I am new & this is my first posting....hope I have not overlooked a thread somewhere.

I am intending to construct a small walk-in/ closset humidor....about 3m long x 1.2 m wide x 2.0m high. I am having trouble finding suitable automatic temperature and humidity control equipment. There is some great stuff in the US but voltage & transport costs make these prohibitive.

I have looked at using a small wall mounted Fondis Wine Master (C18s - cost about $3K...I have a larger Fondis IN50 in my wine cellar & it works great) for temperature control (with a bit of twiging of the thermostat). I would then need a dehumidifier and a humidifier. These 3 units would do the job, but not very gracefully.

My question is....does anyone know of a more suitable system or arrangement AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA. I could go nuts in the USA with the equipment they have there......but maybe I will just go nuts here trying to find a solution.

Hoping someone has some ideas.

Welcome!

We are devoid in Australia of good value, good quality, small application humidity equipment.

For small rooms you can get away with:

1 x airconditioner

1 x permanently plumbed steam humidifier with wired hygrometer.

This system works well in a 65% RH 65%F balance.

Shop around for a good Steam Humidifier. You do not need a big unit.

Airconditioner $600

Humidifier + hygrometer $1800

Plumbing, fitting and electrical $600

Simons Boiler Co

Electrode steam humidifiers for adding humidity back into air-conditioned spaces for comfort and electronics.

t: 02 8338 8660

Total approx $3k. The unit you will end up with is perhaps overkill but capable of doing 10000 cigars. What many of our clients do in room conversions is use 3/4 for wine and the rest for cigars.

We are working on a cigar cabinet wine fridge conversion. The designers have been running tests on a 40 - 60 cigar box unit on the Gold Coast and I have a meeting with John Whelan (who is conduction the testing) on Monday here at Czar House. Fingers crossed.

This has been a long time coming and I can't wait for these to be available. Please post pictures once they have the BIG TICK of Approval from you, El Prez.

Once I buy that, will have to think of how to fill it all up. :-D

Many thanks. I have contacted the suggested firm for info.

Apparently up in beautiful QLD you have low humidity. My area (Sydney suburbs, NSW) appears to be the reverse....high humidity, but a wired hydrometer appears what I need for humidity control, in addition to the air con.

I will keep the thread informed with any solutions that I find.

Cheers

Hi Sam, yes Carlingford area. Have we met??

With the trend of the non-smoking laws we all may have to box ourselfs into a sealed room to smoke.

The size is more governed by an available return area in the room. A single wall across the 3m opening is all I need (apart for minor items like insulation, humidity & temperature control, spanish cedar lining etc etc & pots of money to fill it up).

It is realy too big (who said that) but if I reduced it to half size I save nothing on the framing & the temp & hum control, and little on the insulation. There would be a substantial saving on the Spanish cedar but hell, why not. I would also end up with a half size useless return. The big joke on the anti-smoking lobby is that it is part of a gym that is being converted.

Hi, thanks. You are quite right, particularly regarding temperature control, & I think I can sort this out easily.

The wine boys however are a lot more flexiable with humidity....my insulated air con wine cellar maintains around 75% humidity....too high for cigars (65% - 70% as per Habanos). I lost quite a few cigars in a small chest humidor that develloped blue mold. You tend to get a lot more serious once you start throwing out good cigars.

For info, my wine cellar temperature maintains 14deg C plus or minus 1deg C, within an outdoor range of 0deg C to 41deg C, and I have not yet finished the insulation. The installation is a retrofit and is slow going.

Hi, just raising the question again....did it all go pear-shaped or is it back for further testing or was the whole project shelved?
