Wiley Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 I have been thinking of getting a box of cigars to hand out to relatives and friends who don't normally smoke. Do any of you have suggestions? It should be something from a well know marque. Also, it should be a fat cigar, since they tend to be easier to smoke. Nothing that would make them sick. What would you all think about the RyJ Belicosos?
Colt45 Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 The first cigar that came to mind was the montecristo No.4, but for a thicker ring gauge, perhaps the Upmann Connoisser No.1. For something a little "less well known", maybe the JLS1 or JLS2

Thats what I give all my moocher friends. Cheap enough where you dont feel like you are giving away a treasure.
BigSlick Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I would say the Juan Lopez Seleccion #2 as well. It's a mild cigar, with a 50 ring gauge and the price point is right. You have to consider that if they don't smoke often they may take 4 pulls and then set it down to burn out. Seeing that happen to a great cigar may give you nightmares.
El Presidente Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 1. well know marque 2. a fat cigar 3. Nothing that would make them sick. I think the Montecristo Edmundo would hit the mark perfectly. Much lighter than the R&J Belicoso and with a coffee cream profile which can be appreciated by even the newest of cigar inductees.

The Edumndo being a well known marca, smooth and creamy would make it a "Fat" cigar that newbies would (or could) appreciate.
SuperT Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I too was going to say MC#4 until I you mentioned 'fat'. Then Edmundo popped into my mind. Another option to me would be RyJ Ex.4. EVERYONE knows RyJ, nice 'fat' size, floral/sweet/woody. All pleasing to smokers and non-smokers alike. Fairly easy on the wallet too!
harwellplant Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 agree with the choix supreme. great introductory cigar.
Mel Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 » agree with the choix supreme. great introductory cigar. The Choix Sup would fit bill but I WOULD NOT give non-smoking newbies an Edmundo. It is to big and expensive. My experience with giving cigars to casual or rare smokers is they do not want to smoke very long and tire of a larger stick. They waste it. The PC is the size to give away because it is large enough in girth to burn cool enough and short enough to finish by a newbie. Monte #4 is the one. Don't over spend and pressure them to finish more than is pleasurable. Go ahead buy the big ones and see if I'm wrong. Please respond Mr. Prez. let's argue.;-)

Colt45 Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 » get some Macanudos or something else cheap, mild, and non-cuban, he asked for something that would not make them sick:-D
Taino Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 JL N°2 Monte Edmundo although I think non smokers ussualy like better smaller cigars, something like a Party Short, Diplo 5 or Co Siglo I
mgillett Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 I'm going Party Shorts or MC#4. I don't like giving away expensive cigars that are likely to be cast aside.
effinwill Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 The Monte 4 is easy to like. So is the Rafael Gonzalez, eh? Dominican Fonsecas are well-made, light and easy on the palate and tummy. Big fat cigars with pretty wrappers. I've only tried the standard line and liked it for a light daytime smoke. I've heard the other lines aren't very good, though.
Well Armed Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 I agree Mel. An Edmundo would be a terrible giveaway. Well, not terrible but a Mareva or Minuto would be best. Minutos are very flavorful and in almost 99.9% of every time I have given one away they don't even finish half of it. If you give away a big expensive smoke YOU will feel bad if they don't finish it. But a minuto that gets tossed at halfway point won't bugger you too much. And they put less pressure on the smoker to finish it (or it will be a waste) and they will feel better.
Wiley Posted May 17, 2006 Author Posted May 17, 2006 The people I will be giving these to are my family and friends, whom I have real affection for, so I want it to be a real gift. Most of them have no real experience with cigars, and likely none with Cuban cigars. I don't imagine that their idea of what a cigar should be includes a TPC, or even a PC. I don't really care if they finish the whole cigar. That's not the point, for me. Still, I appreciate everyone's ideas on this. Thank you!

Purely for conversational purposes, might it not be something to show them what a great cigar can be, regardless of the name on the band, or size of the cigar? Might this be the "greater" gift?

I agree completely. A couple of guys on another board sent me smaller cigars (panatellas, petit coronas, half coronas) that I never would have considered buying myself, and I found them to great smokes. A little Ramon Allones small club corona just blew me away. You could always just give them a petit corona with a bill of some demonination wrapped around it to show how much you care - Mom gets a C note, your bro a 50, sis a 20 and Dad a 10 with a coupon to McDonalds attached. :-P
03king Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 I'm a fan of the Fonseca line, not too expensive and yet mellow with a light ceramy favor. I hand out the Triangular simply 'cos its a little bigger so they feel like they are actually smoking a cigar but not enough to knock them on there collective ....butt.... Ive moved on to much stronger cigars for myself but always keep some of these around for non smoking guest. a morning cigar or to just actually make a round of golf seem worthwhile!
puffdady Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I agree with the Fonseca line. I think the Cadet would fit the bill (or another PC, TPC). Larger RG sticks do burn cooler for those that might huff too hard on them, but I have never had a non-smoker finish a gifted cigar...
