Sure it's based on real events if you shifted it to rural NSW, changed the protagonist from a Aussie Farmer to a Croat Petty Criminal and so on and so forth.

Suffice to say it's about as real as Pam Andersons funbags.

it is actually based on a mixture of events, the Ivan Milat serial killings south of Sydney and the Peter Falconio death/missing body in the Northern Territory. The film was not released in the NT while the Falconio case was on so as not to influece the jury etc.
