in response to duckguy´s question about our pm, i am wondering what our american members think would happen if the presendential race was down to condi and hillary.

will hillary run and what chance, whether or not condi is in the race?

who are the most likely republican candidates?

Between Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton I feel Hillary would win, based only on the fact that she was once in the limelight and her race. Condoleezza Rice is the better candidate of the two in my opinion but she has two strikes against her in politics, she is a woman and she is a minority. Whether we want to believe it or not America is still segragated when it comes to politics. I would vote for Condoleezza Rice but she has said she will not run. Other than Condi there is no clear front runner yet for nomination.

Nothing scares me more than the chance of seeing Hillary in the oval office.

I think Condi has the balls and brains to run the country.

Sad but very true jj, sad but true.

both are strong, capable women. that notwithstanding, there is a 100% IMprobability that both will be nominated by their respective parties as presidential candidates.

I agree with harwellplant that is very unlikely that both of these ladies will get their party's nominations.

Hillary probably has a better chance at the Dem nomination, but she's still too liberal for the mainstream (despite recent efforts to move her rhetoric more to the middle).

Condi is an unknown as candidate (has she ever run for public office?) -- how will she come off when she's reading from her own script rather than from GW's.

Im not a qualified one to answer this but since I asked the other question...I also dont believe that either will be nominated by their parties if they run, and I believe that Hillary will indeed run. I am probably different from a lot of the Americans on this board in that I tend to lean left (though mostly centered), but I'd have to vote for whoever was running against Hillary. I'm all for a woman president if she's the right one, but that ***** ain't the right one.

I would MUCH prefer Condi, but I think she needs a serious makeover. She comes across as "chuckie-like" scary to me. She needs to let people see her smile more and show what her OWN opinions are on various matters. Once she is done with the Bush administration, I hope that she takes running seriously. She is a smart and wonderfully talented lady that would probably do the kind of job that Thatcher did in Britain.

Hillary just scares the pants off of me ... she's just another double-talking, poll-watching politician.

I would hate to see Hillary run, regardless of her husband, she is a ***** on her own.

Condalisa I believe would make a great president but like was stated there is still a race problem in this country, which is sad. I do hope she stays in government. She is an asset and a great representative of the US.

Aside from the politics, Hillary is a competent speaker, and Condileeza is terrible. (Not that this made a difference in the last election's outcome, but it doesn't help.)

The left would vote for Hillary regardless, and the right for Condileeza.

Unfortunately for the Republicans, the US middle is giving GW really bad approval ratings, so I suspect any Republican, and especially one with close ties to GW, will get punished in the next election.

The US Presidency does tend to flip back and forth pretty regularly between the parties.

Edited because saying "Hillary is a very good public speaker" is flat wrong. She's horribly dry. Competent might be better.

Hitlery has been trying to paint herself as a moderate, but as we say, that is like trying to polish a ****.:-|

She also carries alot of baggage that will haunt her if she really does decide to run.

Hilary or Condi? Niether.

As long as the debates are not done in the nude.

They both scare me.

IMHO I think that the next Presidential candidate should run on an immigration reform platform.

Condi without a second thought. I have trust issues involving Hillary, as in I don't trust her to look out for the majority's well being.

This may be best used for another thread, but,

Do you think America is ready for a woman president?

I would personally vote for the right person, man or woman. I'm just not sure the nation would support a woman for commander in chief.

I think there are parts of the country that would have problems with it, but not the most populated parts.

Between two evils I would vote for Condi....

-If Dr. Rice was running, Hillary would have to reinvent her new running line that the WH is a "plantation" (might delay her affairs)

Take a look at Condi's pedigree-born in the segregated backwater of Alabama and having worked her way up to the 2nd prestigious role in US politics. She had a friend who was killed in a school bombing. What the hell kind of line would Hillary use to cover this mountain of a woman?

I see 3 insurmountables for Hillary:

1) You can't win the presidency without winning at least one state in the South (Hillary can't even win her own in the South and moving to NY didn't help)

2) GW won something like 11% of the Black vote, up from 7% in '00. If Condi runs, could she garner half that vote?

3) She is a terrible speaker (nothing like Bill).

I remember an anecdote comparing the two:

While Bill was running and during a convention, a few people were smuggled in to protest. Hillary wanted to take to extreme measures, such as background checks for everyone. When Bill heard of this, he replied, "we aren't going to do that sh**" In short, she isn't good being spontaneous-that special ingredient behind gravitas.

I don't disagree with those who claim that the majority of Americans wouldn't vote for her b/c she's black (they'll vote for her b/c she's the best candidate). I do disagree with the assertion that the US is racist and that another mass movement is needed before we have a black president.

FYI

Intrade.com gives Clinton 45% and Condi 4% in receiving their party's nomination.

Condi has said she will not actively pursue the nomination, but never precluded that she wouldn't accept it.

I agree with the masses. Hillary has too much baggage to win anything except for a congressional seat in a liberized area of our country..

Well, we have never seen a female president in this country, so it is unlikely that it will happen for some time. Condoleeza is more fit for office between the two. She is professional, cold and calculating, like her counterpart. Hillary has been muddied by a lot of questionable business transactions and by her husband. Hillary is extremely liberal. That is not a bad thing in and of itself. However, her plans with regards to america, healthcare and other such things, while well intentioned, would probably drive the country to the ground. The other troublesome thing is that Hillary has had many years to plan and scheme, 8 years of her husband's presidency, now a senator of NY (which I think is ridiculous. Move to ny, establish residency and becoem a senator. Because she really cares about ny? Or because she cares about a political career? That's a load of you know what. If that's not exploitation of election laws, I don't know what is)

I would like to see Rudolph Guiliani run for president. He's qualified and no nonsense. A possible scenario for the november elections will be that the ladies are VP candidates, but even that, politically-speaking, is a big risk, because washington and the US at large have had the silent code and precedent of having a protestant faithed, caucasian male presidents throughout history. The only one who wasn't (he was catholic, but male and caucasian), as I recall, was JFK.

I think the US will cry for change, but who's shoulder will they run to lean on??? It's a dangerous mix politically to have a current lame duck president estranged as per his very low public approval rating. That the populace might just reach for any available alternative as opposed to making an informed and non-impulsive decision is a very likely scenario. From that perspective Hillary has a distinct advantage. Nevertheless, if she should win, my wife and I are likely moving to another country.

Hillary scares the hell out of mean, Condi would make the better president but I doubt she will run. Don't think that Hillary can get elected though, too much baggage and two left wing even though she is trying to appear that she is more to the center.

In my opinion, it would of course have to be Condi... BUT, Hillary will probably get in front because us Americans have such a short attention span that we have already forgotton that we were supposed to lose all respect for Hillary due to her husbands wonderful performance (she would have had a better chance if she divorced him) in the White House (do you think they were CUBAN cigars, used to stimulate Ms. Lewinsky:-P )

Personally, I think Sean Hannity should run, but it will be Senator George Allen (R-VA) that takes it... or maybe Rudy Juli.
