Ken Gargett Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 apologies for the poco gap in the transmission. very difficult to control these guys. we are missingt rob. he has either been arrested by a female secret police officer or has moved in with her. not sure where we last finished. yesterday was a brilliant day - bonefishing at las salinas. i´m unable to give away too much without embarrassing those of us that could not shoot a fish in a barrel (on that subject, macho finally caught his first bonefish - congrats macho, three trips to cuba and $1,000s of dollars later). certainly the best day´s fishing i can remember in one of the world´s most specatular places. heading back at the end of a very long day through thousands of flamingos and other birds. it really is a magic part of the world. as for cigars, as i type this, the press conference for the new r and j is on. rob thought i was going, i thought he was. so we have no idea. no doubt will find out very soon. been going through a few of those fabulous esplendidos and some good hoyo epicure 2´s and fair juan lopez 2´s. will return.
Ken Gargett Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 saturday was a huge one (as opposed to every other day). rob had a tip from one of the waiters at the national that saturday arvo at the house of models was worth a visit (again, as opposed to every other day?). rob then dumped his mate, something at which he is well practiced, and off we went. it really was worth it but for different reasons than one might think. there is an old band of rockers, los kent, who played rock in cuba throughout the 60´s and 70´s tho spent much of that time in jail as it was strictly illegal. they occasionally reform. the lead guitar is deadset keith richard´s unwell twin. they are all in leathers, bandanas, biker t'shirts etc. both balding and longhaired. and so is their huge bunch of groupies who follow them everywhere. these guys dress like hell´s angels meets dad´s army. they bring their grandkids and they all have beer guts. but the place fires up like a south coast beer garden on a sunday arvo about 20 years ago. all the old classics like ´house of the rising sun´, ámerican women´´born to be wild´and so on. and they really turn it on. what was funny was that after it was over and we headed out, leaving the biggest, meanest bunch of would-be bikers on the planet (tho with their grandkids), we saw all the little chinese scooters outside. must be a sight seeing these guys take off on those. there was one electroglide which appeared to be in top condition. cracker afternoon. problem was that macho turned up wearing a shirt that would embarass a colourblind peacock and sat there drinking pina coladadas and red wine jelly at an event that would have scared hunter thompson. no wonder the woman next to him hurled in the garden. he is now known as liberace, the marecon from the malecon. before that, we had divided up for a day or so. i had an old mate from law school working in the caymans and he was over. even dártagnan needed some time off from the three mouseketeers. we visited the home of a friend of a friend etc, worked for the r and j factory but has been shifted to partagas. always interesting, and occasionally depressing to see how the locals live. tonight´s opening starts, so we are told, at the national theatre with a shakespearian ballet, and hopefully lots of drinks - if the tip about the ballet is true. then to the main gallery in the capitol. i suspect that i have missed about four days but time is a little blurred. we have also enjoyed some hamlet robustos. more soon.
