Pulled out the ugliest stick in my personal humidor yesterday. A greenish wrapper Punch SS2 from 1997.

This is the old Corojo wrapper which was often looked like a green gum tree leaf which had fallen in mud.

A quarter of the way in it reminded me again to never judge a book by its cover.

Superb.

Still my favourite wrapper is Colorado Claro (light tan) which looks like it has been wiped with vaseline.....subtle light sheen.

I love the look of Maduro wrappers. They make you feel like you're really smoking a serious stoggie. The smoke seems to billow. But I usually find I enjoy the taste of the claro wrappers like on Trinidad Robusto Extra and some Cohibas. Then again I love Partagas D1. Oh no I'm confused. :-|

I agree. Some of the best smokes I've ever had.

Otherwise, I prefer a tan wrapper that shows the oils. Darker wrappers are often thicker, age slowly, and burn more poorly IME.

Otherwise, I sure like to have my cigar boxes wrapped in $100 bills...

I fondly remember the greenish Corojo wrappers and remember them to be some of the best smoking and tasting wrappers I have ever smoked. I can remember having a huge smile grow fro ear to ear when I opened a box of them up! Not the prettiest cigar to look at, but damn they were tasty!

How about some help for us newbies...

The Cohiba Sublimes... this is a Maduro wrapper, yes?

The Monte #2... which wrapper type is this?

Bolivar PC...

Cohiba Robusto...

PLPC...

Cohiba Lancero...

Romeo y Julieta Churchill...

etc., etc., etc...

This type of information would help a novice like myself be able to understand and detect what type of wrapper I am looking at and /or smoking. Thanks.

It is my understanding that because "Maduro" is a process of heating the tobacco hotter and longer thus making it darker and because the heat makes the tobacco sweeter, that there is absolutely no Maduro wrapper ever used or made for that matter in Cuba.

I agree that the ELs have had a darker wrapper, but it is not a Maduro, and there have been several less than honest vendors calling the ELs as Maduro because of the darker shade of the wrapper.

The wrapper on a recently smoked JL S1 was, for me, as close to perfect as

I'll probably ever find.

As a side note, I've smoked some NCs with true Cuban seed - not the hybrid -

corojo wrappers, and though they were also on the greenish side, and quite

rough looking and veiny, I always enjoyed them, and took to seeking out cigars

with this wrapper.

I was once in the mindset "the darker, the better"...Those days are now long gone and am with you Rob. Colorado Claro, nice sheen of oils is my definite favorite.

Maduro in the sense of NCs are my favorite, although I havent smoked an NC in quite awhile now. Major difference between maduro NC and "maduro" Cuban cigars. 90% of the so called "maduro" Cuban cigars I have smoked have had very thick wrappers and were almost fire proof allowing nill smoke volume and poor burns.

Americans go crazy for the maduro wrapper in NCs. I think, like Tampa stated, some purveyors tend to play off that craze and label dark Cuban cigars and ELs as "maduro" because they know that most Americans will buy them. I'm not saying that liking these dark cigars is wrong, I used to be on that bandwagon. But, do yourself a favor if you only want dark Cuban cigars and try the lighter stuff..you'll be amazed.

»I used to be on the "darker is better" bandwagon. With some cigars, I still am. Just based on experience, some marca/vitola combinations have had better flavors if they were darker. For other cigars, darker is definitely not better. I have (and still do) smoked cigars from '97 and '98, but have not noticed a huge difference in the wrappers. So what is my favorite? Whatever is on the Partagas Serie du Conn. No. 1s from '98...freakin' fantastic.

Now, in non-Cuban cigars, I do typically prefer maduro wrappers. My favorites are probably Conn. Broadleaf followed by Nicaraguan wrappers (on Padrons). I typically do not like Cameroon wrappers. I love the Ecuadoran sun-grown wrappers that are on the Ashton VSG and the rosado, Dominican grown wrappers on the Opus. I am also a big fan of the new Ecuadoran grown Oscuro Natural wrapper from La Flor Dominicana.

The one thing I like in my wrappers are that they are thin and smooth, rather than thick and veiny. I am mostly indifferent to hue.

I was also of this school. After trying several "light tan" I find they taste more dimensional and burn better. I thought the darker the more robust but recently have been proven otherwise.

I like the light tan, thin wrappers but as they say " you can't judge a book by its cover" I've also had some damn ugly wrappers and the smoking experience was phenomenal.

Sounds good to me. Used to have some smokes with a Colorado wrapper and slight reddish tint. Very good those were.
