JohnS Posted May 19 Posted May 19 Barrell Cigar Blend Bourbon Earns 98 Points from Wine Enthusiast What does it take for a bourbon to earn a near-perfect 98 points from Wine Enthusiast? Barrell's Cigar Blend did it—and sold out almost immediately. By Beth Squires - Published: May 19, 2026 Barrell Craft Spirits’ Cigar Blend Bourbon has earned a 98-point rating from Wine Enthusiast, marking one of the highest scores awarded to an American whiskey by the publication. The expression, which launched in March 2025, has already sold out nationwide following a string of competition accolades. The 98-point score adds to a growing list of honors for Cigar Blend. The bourbon previously won a Platinum medal and Best Unique Barrel Finish Bourbon at the LA Spirits Awards competition. “We’re thrilled that Barrell Cigar Blend Bourbon has been rated 98 by Wine Enthusiast,” a Barrell Craft Spirits spokesperson said. The rapid sellout has prompted the Louisville, Kentucky-based company to plan additional releases. A second batch is expected in late June, with a third release scheduled for September. Barrell Craft Spirits has built a reputation as one of the most acclaimed independent blenders and bottlers in the American whiskey category. The company, founded by Joe Beatrice in 2013, sources and blends aged whiskeys from distilleries across North America, releasing them at cask strength. The Cigar Blend expression is finished in barrels selected to complement the flavors associated with premium cigar smoking, a niche that has gained traction among bourbon enthusiasts seeking crossover luxury experiences. Wine Enthusiast’s 98-point rating places Cigar Blend in elite territory. The publication uses a 100-point scale, with scores of 98 and above classified as “Superb” and described as a benchmark for the category. Scores at this level are rarely awarded to bourbon expressions. Barrell Craft Spirits has consistently performed well in major spirits competitions and with critics. The company’s portfolio includes its flagship Barrell Bourbon line, Barrell Rye, Barrell Rum, and its premium Barrell Gold Label series, among other releases. Pricing and distribution details for the upcoming batches have not yet been announced. Lucas Buck Posted May 22 Posted May 22 First impression it’s very good. Quite a unique profile. Tried it neat with a strong custom roll. Worked well. Incredibly complex, divine nose, long finish. If you’re a fan of high proof bourbons grab a bottle. It’s a tad pricey but I feel like the value is there. Cheers! 3 1
