Angel Oliva Jr. Passes Away at Age 91

Angel “Pichi” Oliva Jr., who served as vice president of Oliva Tobacco Co., passed away at the age of 91 on April 30.

Oliva was born on March 4, 1935, in Tampa, Fla. to Angel and Estela Oliva. He attended Jesuit High School and the University of Florida, where he earned a degree in architecture. He also served his country in the United States Army and was a 32nd degree Mason Scottish Rite Egypt Temple Shrine.

He began his professional career in architecture, joining McElvy, Jennewein, Stefany & Howard, earning a lifetime achievement award for his design innovation at the John F. Germany Public Library and Auditorium. In the mid-1960s, he co-founded the firm Alfonso, Greene & Oliva, where he was an innovator with projects at Tampa International Airport, St. John’s Episcopal School Library, and numerous other civic and public buildings shaped by his firm’s thoughtful design and craftsmanship.

He would join the Oliva Tobacco Co. in the mid-1970s, devoting decades to its growth and diversification in his role as vice president, which he held until his retirement in 2010.

Angel “Pichi” Oliva Jr., who spent several decades as part of Oliva Tobacco Co., one of the cigar world’s most important cigar tobacco growers and brokers, died on April 30, 2026. He was 91 years old.

Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Oliva earned a degree in architecture from the University of Florida in 1962 and later served in the United States Army. After starting his professional career in architecture, working on projects including the Tampa International Airport and St. John’s Episcopal School Library, he joined the family cigar tobacco business, Oliva Tobacco Co., in the mid-1970s. He helped grow the company, which was founded by his father Angel Oliva Sr., one of the original members of the Cigar Aficionado Hall of Fame. He retired in 2010 and traveled the world.
