On Saturday, May 2, a Carson City institution of sorts will take up a new name while still honoring the character that made it popular in the first place.

On Tuesday, Neil Mayfield talked to the Appeal while sitting in the refashioned lounge of the former Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar at 301 N. Carson St. Mayfield bought the business in January, has had a few months of positive feedback and is ready for the next chapter.

Saturday, to usher in this chapter, DJs will start at noon “and run through 2 a.m.,” Mayfield said. He said Carson City BBQ will be catering from 5 to 7 p.m., and NVious Bites will be present in the day for the wine walk. The event is to celebrate the rebranding of Jimmy G’s to Capital City Saloon.

“The community feels like they own it,” Mayfield said of Jimmy G’s, which opened in 2009, “and I want to give a nod to that as much as possible, to their history. I want to pay homage to the city and the historic value of it.”

Mayfield intends to broaden the bar’s appeal. Friday and Saturday night discos for younger crowds will continue, he said, but he wants to capture older demographics during the week, to offer a place with a variety of fine cigars, whiskeys, bourbons, scotches, rums and beers on tap. Come football season, Mayfield plans on opening at 9 a.m., so fans can view games on one of many new TVs and a centralized sound system.

“I didn’t run out the client base they have,” he said. “I just added to it.”

Capital City Saloon is “whiskey-centric,” offering local labels, but has everything a bar should have, Mayfield maintained.

The 56-year-old spent 40 years of his life in Las Vegas and three decades in the food and beverage sector. At 19, he was a busboy at Rio. He was a bartender at MGM Grand when it opened in late 1993.

“I remember the billboards: watch us roar in ’94,” he recalled.

More recently, Mayfield opened two Montecristo cigar bars, one at Caesars Palace and one at the Paris Hotel.

“This is my niche, right here, a cigar bar,” he said Tuesday, noting the leather furniture, new lighting and historic pictures on the wall. “When it came up, it was a no-brainer for me.”

Mayfield followed his wife to Douglas County in 2023. He found a smaller community without Vegas heat where his family could flourish. Last fall, a friend in the industry told him about Jimmy G’s going on the market. It was just what he was looking for.

“A cigar bar with a fantastic location,” he said.

He recalled visiting Jimmy G’s with his wife on a date and thinking, “there is a lot of potential for this lounge.”

Capital City Saloon can serve cigar aficionados or those wanting “to dabble in the hobby a little bit,” Mayfield said.

For those who don’t drink or smoke, Mayfield brought in an espresso and cappuccino machine. He also has five overhead air cleaners to keep the indoor atmosphere clear. He doesn’t want anyone’s date leaving smelling like smoke.

“Air quality is paramount not just for our guests,” he said, “but for our staff.”

Capital City Saloon has nine employees. Mayfield said he’s increased security — part of his effort to make the patron experience as enjoyable as possible. He wants people to sit, socialize, network. He wants the establishment to be vital, like it has been, to the cultural life of the city.

“My staff is phenomenal,” he added. “They really make this establishment.”
