Plasencia has extensive growing operations in Honduras and Nicaragua. It’s unclear of the amount of tobacco lost, but the structure is, at the very least, substantially damaged. Video of the fire was posted by Crónica TN8. “We are grateful that the fire was contained quickly and that our people are safe,” said Néstor Andrés Plasencia, fifth-generation member of the Plasencia cigar family. “Our team responded with professionalism and discipline, and we are thankful for the rapid coordination with the Estelí Fire Department. We are equally moved by the support from our fellow manufacturers in Estelí — this industry truly operates as a family.” Update — Shortly after this story was published, the company issued a statement saying no injuries have been reported and expressing its sincere gratitude to the Estelí Fire Department and all first responders for their swift action and professionalism. The company also expressed its appreciation of the immediate support offered by fellow manufacturers and members of the Estelí cigar community. “The solidarity and willingness to assist reflect the spirit of collaboration that defines the region’s tobacco industry,” the statement said.
