I’m not loving this whole secret, celebrity infused, upper crust event thing happening in cigars. It already exists in fashion, in watches, in food, in cars, etc, etc, etc. And it’s not that I think influencers and rich people and status and exclusivity have somehow never been apart of things or that I’d feel differently if I was well heeled enough to be invited.

No, it’s more fundamental than that. It’s that cigars for many of us are the great equalizer. They serve to bring together people who may not otherwise have much in common in terms of age, lifestyle, wealth, race, etc. Cigars allow a means of connecting and sharing and living that isn’t tied, as so much is, to what one has, eschewing it instead for what we share.

These events position cigars as something else with which to divide people. But all I’ve ever known them as—all I ever WANT to know them as—is something that can unite people.
