JohnS Posted September 20, 2025 Posted September 20, 2025 John Daly Cigars A golfing legend known for hitting immense drives and living a laid-back lifestyle now has a cigar brand Sep 19, 2025 - By David Savona Photo/Jorge Lemus/NurPhoto via Getty Images The first time the world saw John Daly play golf, crowds were gob smacked by his incredible, powerful drives. He was a pioneer of the grip-it-and-rip-it style of play, the first man to average more than 300 yards in driving distance on the PGA Tour, which he did back in 1997. He was the distance king of the 1990s, leading the PGA Tour in driving distance for 11 years (1991 through 1993 and 1995 through 2002). His booming power and a deceptively proficient short game led him to two major victories, the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 Open Championship. Daly has become a bit of a living legend for not taking the serious game of golf all that seriously. Videos of him pulling up his cart to the tee box with a giant bottle of vodka and a cigarette in his mouth abound on the Internet. He appeared in the recent sequel to Happy Gilmore, living in the lead character’s garage and offering advice while sipping on hand sanitizer. Now, Daly is a part of the cigar business, joining with San Giuseppe cigars on two lines meant to reflect his easygoing approach to life. “I learned one thing—I try and have a good time. I’ve had a blessed life. I’ve lived hard, I’ve played hard,” says the 59-year-old on a recent Zoom call. “I’m not a huge cigar smoker,” he admits, puffing on a cigarette. “I do them more for celebrations. I love to do them every now and then. It’s soothing.” There are two versions of John Daly cigars, Long Game The Lion and Short Game The Wild One. Each comes in one size, and both are made in the Dominican Republic. (Photo/San Giuseppe) Long Game The Lion is the larger of the two, measuring 6 1/4 inches long by 52 ring gauge. It’s made with Ecuadoran wrapper and binder (the wrapper is grown from Habano seeds). The filler is a three-country blend of Dominican, Pennsylvanian and Ecuadoran tobaccos. The name is a nod to the length of the cigar, and the biggest shot in golf, the tee shot, part of the long game of the sport—and something at which Daly excelled. San Giuseppe bills it as medium in body. It comes in boxes of 10 or in bundles of 10 and has a suggested retail price of $15 per cigar. Short Game The Wild One is made with Ecuador Habano wrapper, Dominican binder and a mix of Dominican and Pennsylvanian filler tobaccos. The smokes are (naturally) short, 4 1/2 by 50, named for parts of the golf game played closer to the hole: approach shots, chips and putts. The cigars retail for $12.50 apiece and come in boxes of 20. The band on the cigar shows an illustration of Daly, complete with his signature mullet and sunglasses. The smoke is not only shorter than The Long Game, it’s blended to be milder. Soon, the company is going to expand its packaging offerings, coming out with a humidified four-pack of specially-crafted Short Game cigars meant to be easier for golfers to store and smoke. The cigars are pre-cut, packed in a resealable pouch containing four Short Game cigars and a Boveda humidification pack. It’s expected to be available in early November, and will sell for $26.95 a pack, or just $6.73 a cigar, significantly less expensive than buying them otherwise. San Giuseppe plans to use those packs not only in golf courses, but in convenience stores as well. While Daly was better known for his long game, he finds the short game more important than before. “Now, I don’t hit it as far as I used to,” he says. “I have to work harder on the short game than ever.” And while he hit massive bombs, he claims he got more appreciation from his finer work with the wedge. “Those 120-yard shots in, to me that was the ultimate feeling. You gotta beat ’em with the short game.” San Giuseppe was founded by Joseph Bonanno (president of the company) and Jaysen Messina (vice president) about five years ago. It sells its own brand along with several cigars made with sports stars, among them Wade Boggs and José Reyes. The John Daly cigar has been on the market since 2023, and is (so far) sold in a few dozen cigar shops. The cigars, along with other San Giuseppe cigars, are made in Tamboril, Dominican Republic, at a small factory called Profeta Cigars Inc., which is also referred to as ProTabac. Bonanno says San Giuseppe is a part owner of the factory. Source: https://www.cigaraficionado.com/article/john-daly-cigars 3 1
