Prohibition rebrands as new cigar lounge in downtown Corpus Christi

A downtown Corpus Christi bar recently rebranded as a private cigar lounge.

Prohibition, located on North Chaparral Street right next to Retro, is now the go-to place for cigar aficionados to puff away.

The rebranding was due to business not doing so well at the bar, co-owner Freddy Rodriguez said. As a member of a cigar lounge in Houston, Rodriguez said he was eager to bring the idea to Corpus Christi.

"There's a lot of networking within these types of lounges," Rodriguez said. "It consists of a lot of business-oriented professionals. I want our members to be around like-minded individuals because there is a chance they can make good contacts that can possibly help them down the road with business or vice versa."

As of July 29, Rodriguez said there were about 30 founding members enrolled at the lounge. The cap for founding members is 100, and the cap for other members is 150.

The first 100 people to sign up as a founding member, which costs $850 for a yearly membership, receive perks including 24-hour access, a complimentary drink daily, 15% off food and drinks, and more.

While smoking will be a regular occurrence at the lounge, patrons will not be able to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes or hookah. Rodriguez said that aside from cigars, members can smoke tobacco pipes.

"I'm trying to help spur downtown with something new," Rodriguez said. "It's a good place for you to be alone, have a cigar, relax, have a business meeting or just do some work."
