I've been disappointed by spilling ash all over myself enough times that I just tap it all the time.

I enjoy seeing how long the ash will hold. However, if a cigar is giving me trouble, I ash immediately in order to inspect the structure of the burning end and to look for issues.

Tonight was my third Carlotta from a 5-pack. Great construction and tremendous smoke output. I made it this far before the ash fell off.

Sometimes trying, sometimes just giving up on the ash. I mean, it's pleasant to see but while doing something it's impossible sometimes to focus on that, so before creating a mess around me I just keep it clean.

Some say keeping the ash on your cigar is just for show or a friendly competition among aficionados. Others argue it helps regulate the burn and enhances flavor by insulating the foot. And of course, there are those who claim it does more harm than good, potentially turning the cigar bitter the longer the ash remains.

Personally, I don’t find that it changes the flavor much either way. For me, keeping the ash intact is part of the ritual, something cool to admire, and a little challenge between myself and the cigar (or even friends).

I very rarely ash. Only while driving or other situations where I might make a mess outside my environs. Long ashes are pleasing to me.

2023 Galanes. Most of the sticks from this box have a strong Damascone, floral flavor. When I first encountered this flavor I was intrigued and delighted by the novelty. That delight has worn off and now I am disgusted by the flavor and the bitter profile it accompanies. Great ash though! It didn't fall until the half-way point.
