slee552 Posted January 11, 2025 Posted January 11, 2025 Was gifted a single CoRo by a friend in the factory paper box a year ago, didn’t like the aroma at the time so I threw it in a tupperdor without taking off the paper box thinking I might give it away. Recently got around to thinking I should try it at some point, opened the paper box today to see how it’s progressing and what do you know, big chunks of mold all over the stick for fk’s sake. Luckily, all other sticks in the tupperdor look fine so far. Is this a thing, paper boxes trapping extra moisture and letting mold breed? Do tubos also help foster mold? Temp has been a little high, probably ranging 70-75, but again the other sticks kept in wood boxes look fine.
Chibearsv Posted January 11, 2025 Posted January 11, 2025 I think any excess moisture and higher temperatures can trigger that growth. I’ve seen it with boxes, tubos, and cardboard boxes. I’ve also mostly seen all those packages without any mold at all. The condition can be due to mishandling or storage conditions anywhere in the chain from production to consumer handling. I’ve purchased from a vendor who delivered moldy cigars often. I don’t use them anymore. It happens occasionally with all vendors though. Inspect your incoming deliveries and look for mold or water stains on boxes or cigars to clean the cigars and remove packaging if necessary.
Havanaaddict Posted January 11, 2025 Posted January 11, 2025 I know you say your temp was high 70 - 75 most of the time it has to be a perfect storm to kick off the mold. The high temp and high humidity added to the cardboard packaging is risky. Tubos, I don't see mold that often as they are sealed pretty good, I see more tubes with bloom! If you can't keep you temps down take the humidity down in the low 60's, cigars are tougher then we all think! I have done experiments where I have kept some cigars at mid to high 50's temp and same humidity from long term aging, after 5 years the cigars were fine.
