Ok I’m slowly catching up from my trip back to Australia in April. I jumped at a random chance to procure a box of old robustos (‘04 is pretty old by my standards) to see what they were like.

Thought it would be prudent to try the cohiba first

Nice looking cigar.

My review will be brief - it was a nice cigar and a great experience. But it wasn’t amazing - which is fine - to bastardise a wine expression - there aren’t any great vitolas, just great cigars. And I suspect this was the case here.

CoRos are beloved by many and I am sure this is not by accident. Still have 4 other robustos to look forward to though.

One final thought (apologies if already discussed elsewhere) - I was under the impression that these seleccion 5 packs were generally for duty free and perhaps in clumsy other words, not really intended for ‘hardcore’ cigar customers.

If true, does that mean anything about the product within? Is the CoRo here EXACTLY the same as other CoRos from a 25 box? Is quality control the same? Or what about the other standard production robustos within?

As always, thoughts appreciated!

I wouldn't challenge that view. The price per stick on these were always higher than boxes (although the selling point for serious smokers were the non-standard production cigars like the HU, RyJ & Monte Robustos). At the end of the day 90%+ of these were almost certainly purchased by non-smokers as gifts or novices that don't know any better.

I also recall most reviews of these Seleccions were less than stellar even going back to 04. It doesn't appear that there was really much effort put into the blends for the non-standard models and the CoRo, Epi 2 and PSD4 are just regular production.
