Gubbins Posted March 12, 2024 Posted March 12, 2024 This may sound like a question which has the most obvious answer, but it seems economically strange if it is the case… Looking at the pricing list, there are singles labled CELLO. The obvious reason for this being that they are cellophane wrapped. Now my Italian isn’t great, but they are so significantly cheaper than the (non-cello) versions that is makes me think it means something else? And when did Cubans start getting cello wrapped?! For example, a single H Upman Mag 50 costs €19.50 as a Tubo, but the one on the list labled CELLO is just €9.65. Surely there is something else to it, than it is just being cellophane wrapped, because no one is paying and additional €10 PER STICK for metals tubes. A box of H.Upmann Half Corona works out at €6.40 / stick, where are a cello version is only €3.75? Because €3.75 just seems ridiculously cheap. I have never seen a Half Corona wrapped in cellophane either? Am I missing something, does CELLO mean something else? Or are cellophane wrapped Cuban cigar singles, which I have never seen, just cost half the price…oddly. Can anyone from Italy, or anyone who has visited please shed some light. At risk of looking like a daft b@st!d. TIA.
Puros Y Vino Posted March 12, 2024 Posted March 12, 2024 My Italian is pretty good. I would assume they are referring to Cellophane. Perhaps the vendor puts them in a cello sleeve since the listing is for a single cigar? What is the source of this list? Is this from Diademas SA catalogue? A €10 per stick hike makes no sense unless the pricing difference is due to them being vintage? Hopefully some Italian locals are still up or will see this in the morning?

In Italian, "cello" refers to a large stringed instrument usually played while sitting down. This suggests that this vendor gives a substantial discount to cello players -- perhaps because the proprietor is a cello player himself. Alternately, it might suggest that the cigars in question had previously been used to bow the strings of a cello during a musical performance and the used cigars are now being sold at a discount due to damage incurred during the performance. 11

01Vert Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 Could the cello mean wholesale? Was this a ‘not for public’ list? That may explain it. Otherwise the prices don’t make sense.

vladdraq Posted March 13, 2024 Posted March 13, 2024 Maybe the price is only for the cellophane, for people who don't afford the cigar. For smelling purposes.
Gubbins Posted March 13, 2024 Author Posted March 13, 2024 😂😂 Some great replies here, but the case remains open…I got them off the gov site under the most recent public pricing. As many have said, the difference in price between a tubo and cello doesn’t make sense. Any Italians on here have any idea? Not sure why anyone would buy a 5 pack of Monte 4s for €60, when you could buy 5 individual cello versions for €37, is the point I am making. Otherwise no one’s would buy the packs/boxes. Curious to know as I will be in Italy on Thursday.
