[Ken Gargett]

one of the rugby league all time greats passed away in the last few days. one of the toughest blokes ever to play any sport. john sattler.

now, he was a souths player and a new south Welshman, both things to abhor, but you could not help but admire the guy. i met him around twenty years ago. very surprised at how small he was. but you could not have ever hoped to meet a nicer guy. not sure his opponents thought so.

always loved the story about his first game for Australia, on an English tour against one of the great regional sides. he was up against one of the greatest English props ever to play the game. the aussies knew that sattler could be baited and so they drummed into him, no matter what happened, don't fall for it. every time they packed for a scrum, the English prop (apols, don't recall the name) would join the scrum swinging his fist around into sattler's jaw. finally, early second half, he'd had enough and ducked. the punch kept on straight into the jaw of the unsuspecting aussie hooker, elwyn walters (i think). knocked him senseless. 

that was enough for sattler and he let fly. broke the prop's jaw. the prop was carried off and they were still looking for teeth after the game. the prop never took the field again. needless to say, sattler got himself sent off. 

toughest bloke imaginable.
