The obvious question is why?

'It is in Cuba's interests to ship populace and problems offshore.

US and Cuba to renew talks on law enforcement issues

  • A high-level US delegation will visit Cuba soon to revive discussions with the communist-ruled island on police and law enforcement issues, the State Department said Thursday.

“US and Cuban officials will meet this month… in Havana to discuss topics of bilateral interest on international law enforcement matters,” including transnational crime, a State Department spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

The official did not give dates for the meeting but said the delegation will include officials from the departments of State, Justice and Homeland Security.

The talks are designed to pursue “constructive discussions… to advance US interests,” the spokesman said, but will not come “at the expense of human rights.”

Washington and Havana last year resumed talks on migration issues amid a tide of Cubans fleeing the island toward the United States.

The US embassy in Havana this month resumed issuing visas for Cubans wishing to settle in the United States.

But a “normalization” of relations with the island nation is not yet on the agenda.

Former US president Donald Trump had put an end to the policy of openness towards Cuba initiated by his predecessor Barack Obama.

When President Joe Biden took office in early 2021, he promised to review American policy toward Cuba. But his policies hardened following anti-government protests on the island in July 2021, and a subsequent crackdown on dissent.

Granma even had an article about it, so it must be serious. 🤣

The state department has been sending large delegations to Havana every couple months since early last year when they opened back up. The progress has been slow, but there has been progress. The departments of Justice and Homeland Security are an interesting addition, but that's almost certainly so they can just bitch face to face about the current influx of migrants. I'm not particularly optimistic things are going to drastically change soon, but I'm all for Trying.

  • That whole "State Sponsor of Terrorism" tag can be a real mood killer on first dates.
  • They need more food and medicine from us.
  • They understand the current situation isn't the Mariel boat lift and they are losing their best, not their worst. They would LOVE to control who goes and when. Their problems aren't going anywhere.
  • Diaz Canel's Final Term is nearing its end, he has less to loss than ever before.
  • They NEED U.S. based (or anywhere based) Tourists to replace all the Russians that stopped coming AND to provide foreign currency to do business with.

Theres a million Cubans at the border or on their way there, along with members of other countries. The US cant assimilate those #'s, especially if you are going to give them benefits for housing, food etc. Well thats over with, now you cant cross unless you have a sponsor that lives in the US that signs an affidavit. But the problems started back in 2018 and is one of the causes of the immigration issues along with US inflation. The US was buying $42 million oil from Venezuela daily, 95% of jet fuel used in the US was from Venezuela. Then from one day to the next was shut down. Just after that the Magnitsky act was applied to Venezuela and Cuba. This means no electronic transfers of US currency to either country. All banks have been advised they will lose all their secured deposits if any transfers are made. The US has made many efforts to block fuel coming from Venezuela into Cuba. So now any fuel from Venezuela has to go to third country and be disguised as a "donation". I think the US govt realized that instead of strangling those two countries the effect was greater felt here in the US. Ya see, by cutting off Venezuela our suppliers had to change and thus world oil prices go up. By cutting off Cuba from Venezuelan oil you just drove them all crazy with the power outages (+1000's of mosquito bites) and they entered the transfer portal to Nicaragua or wherever. The ones that are in the US due to this recent exodus had $$$. They sold all their cars, houses to get into the US. The ones at the border are broke and the ones staying back are in Cuba are just too old or the poorest of the poor. The lines for fuel are there every day but just gasoline. No diesel. Lines for food continue. There is no tourism there. For 25+ years it was the most uncomfortable situation to get into Cuba in December and out the 1st two weeks of January. This Christmas/New Years it was a cake walk. No lines, no waiting, a basic ghost of an airport. The planes I got on were 1/2 full. The Nicaragua flights, those had lines inside and out. Shipping Cubans out is good business for those that are involved. Tickets are $4000+/person, those that benefit are the charter companies and the Cuban government. Do they have a master plan? No they just like chaos. John
