I just finished reading a book called Everything is F*cked : A book about hope by Mark Manson. When I saw the name of this thread I immediately thought of the book. One of the men credited as the father of spin or propaganda, and essentially the guy that created public relations as we know them today was Edward Bernays. He’s partially responsible for getting women to smoke openly back in the 1930’s. The whole “Torches of Freedom” movement that he initiated during an Easter Parade, of all things, was the catalyst. It was a campaign to get women to smoke because back then essentially 50% of the population, aka prospective customers to the tobacco industry, were not smoking publicly due to social norms of the day. Bernays was convinced that if the tobacco companies appealed to women’s feeling brains that they could get them to smoke in public. He was right! He was also the nephew of Sigmund Freud. I wonder if uncle Sig had anything to do with his knowledge of the feeling vs thinking brain.
