El Presidente Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 Let's kick this one around What is/was the purpose of the Depositio Santander stamp found on some vintage Spanish Boxes? When did it start? When did it cease?
Popular Post NSXCIGAR Posted January 12, 2022 Popular Post Posted January 12, 2022 I believe this would have been the stamp for products having been stored in Tabacalera's warehouse in the municipality of Santander. It looks like there was a new warehouse built in 1959 which was closed in 1993, so perhaps the stamp existed until then. The "old" building looks pretty old so who knows when the stamp began. Not sure what portion of the Spanish product would have come through the Santander warehouse or how common the stamp is on Spanish product. 6
Shrimpchips Posted January 13, 2022 Posted January 13, 2022 https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblioteca_Central_de_Cantabria English translation says that the old building was erected in 1900 and at one time handled half of the tobacco imports into Spain. Not sure what share of that was Cuban or how that share changed throughout the century, but seems like a good portion came through there. 2 2

Estimate like 95% Cuban and maybe some from the Philippines. Ssntander was/is an important trading port with Cuba and Spanish Main. Seen old shipping firm signs there when I visited. 5
