El Presidente Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I would love to get some feeback. The worst two LE releases to date in terms of satisfaction (flavour/construction). There are no right answers here. Mine are: 1. Cohiba Pirimide LE 2. Montecristo D LE (still very young so it may improve)
dragon Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 When new, the older Hoyo Particulares EL's in boxes of 5 were a total disappointment for me. Very mild, virtually no classic EL flavor, and pretty bland. And I think they've gotten ever worse with age. The coffins are nice though :-)
Jimmy2 Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 When i first smoked a Montecristo D LE when they just came out it was very tasty.Smoked one last week lost alot of flavor i think they need more nap time.
waldo Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I'd have to say that box of plugged Montecristo D that I have.:-|
1f1fan Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 A box of Monte D I have - very firm draw and tasted like soap. I sure hope they turn around in a few years. :-(
dragon Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Must be a lot of variation in those new Monte 'D's, I've heard everything from 'a fantastic chocolate bomb' to 'a complete dud'.

dysfunctional Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I would say the Monty C....I call it Monty Crap.....
The Privateer Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 » I would say the Monty C....I call it Monty Crap..... I'll second that.

Smell a bar of Ivory soap and you have what my Monte D taste like...any thoughts El Prez?
pittesq Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 » A box of Monte D I have I'd have to agree unfortunately.
n-tron Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I've never been a big fan of the Romeo Y Julieta Hermoso No 1. Always left me flat. I know others who disagree and have enjoyed this cigar.
Mel Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 » » I would say the Monty C....I call it Monty Crap..... » » I'll second that. I have smoked almost half a box and they last one I had was the best of the lot. I hope they are getting better. A buddy and I went on a river float for small mouth bass and he started the day with a Monte C. I asked why he chose that one and he replied that he did not have the boating thing down yet and if he fell in he did not care if that cigar was lost. I have had less than stellar performance out of the Cohiba Sublime. I guess I just expected to much.
Spartagas Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 » A box of Monte D I have - very firm draw and tasted like soap. I sure hope » they turn around in a few years. :-( Geez, and here I was thinking I was the only one! Had an '04 Monte 2 last summer which I swear was made out of Palmolive. I then had one out of the same batch (it was a fiver) that was one of the best cigars I've ever had. The inconsistency of cuban cigars never ceases to amaze me. With regard to the LE's, I may be alone in this, but I had a PSD3 recently that left me underwhelmed.

Never smoked a good one. From other accounts, Hoyo Particulares. I've not smoked one (yet) but never read anything good about them even though they were released in 2000 and again in 2001 issues of EL's. I don't think the Romeo Exhibicion #2 were worth a hoot, though I fear that the half box I secured was fake.
shrink Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 My nominee for the EL Hall of Shame: Hoyo Epicure Especiale.

Smell a bar of Ivory soap and you have what my Monte » D taste like...any thoughts El Prez? That soapy tasting thing is truly weird. The first time I experienced it was with a Belicoso Fino. I've since experienced it with Mag 46 and a couple of other examples. Maybe one or two cigars from a whole box would taste distinctly like hand soap, and the others were unaffected. I first posted about the phenomen over at the Cigar Aficionado board and I was stunned to learn how many other smokers had experienced the same thing from time to time. My speculation is that a roller had some kind of soap or lotion on his or her hands when rolling these cigars. The taste was distinctly foreign to tobacco.

First Monte D I had was a chocolate bomb....they have gone into flavourless mode since then. I have had plenty of great Monte C yet I know many of you disaggree (Ken detests them). Love the Partagas Pirimide and the HDM Epicure Especial :-P
Loki Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 I'm an Upmann fan but tried a few Mag 50s and was not thrilled. I'll stick with the Mag 46.

DocRKS Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 I think the RyJ baby torpedo misses the mark by a lot....
Elric Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 Mag 50 by a nose over RyJ baby beli in my book.
Jimmy2 Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 The Mag 50 has been a hit since i bought the box every one has been tasty and has not failed me yet. By far the best EL of 2005 Period!! And please do compare the Mag 50 to the Mag 46 they are totally differant cigars..
Tampa1257 Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 I have not been thrilled by many of the Edicion Limitada's. A few stand outs have been the PSD3 and the Sublime. I have smoked several of the Monte C's before that had several years of age and thought they were much better than most of the other El's but still needed a way's to go. The disappointment far out weight the stellar cigars. The Hoyo's have all been vastly disappointing, the Cohiba Piramides at first were awful and only now beginning to be smokable, the Partagas Piramides were and still are awful IMHO. I have not smoked any of the 2005 production El's (anyone want to share?) As far as the "Soapy" taste, I have come across this on a few cigars, a couple of Bolivar Corona Juniors, a Mag 46 and a RyJ Exhib No.4 before. I have no clue what has caused it to happen, but the taste was un-mistakingly soap. (I also had not recently washed my hands either)

Jim I was not comparing these 2 cigars just implying that for my taste that I would stick with the Mag 46. I'm sure that the Mag 50 will turn into something special but for now I'm not thrilled and have not bought a box for long term aging. Once again taste is subjective, you like this vitola and I do not. Bring a couple to the FOH/NYC Herf and we can debate this further, maybe the sticks you have aquired are better than the few that I have tried. See ya there.
